I have been working at Amazon full-time

    Pros

Majority of the leaders/managers are pretty good. Amazon hires the typical "alpha male" personalities, but everyone gets along and works well with each other.
Typical work week in Operations is 4 days on and 3 days off.

    Cons

A lot of politics when it comes to promoting. If you meet/surpass standards with your shift, are a good leader, are respected by the associates, your peers, and your superiors), but do not do anything to "showcase" yourself or do anything to make the company better, you will not get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Please keep the micromanaging to a minimum.

    Pros

At Amazon we are given the opportunity to own the part of the business we are responsible for and drive it forward in the manner in which we think will drive the best results. You work with amazing people and focus on the biggest challenges in the industry with global scope.

    Cons

Leadership is hit and miss with some amazing leaders scattered across the company, and an number of poor leaders in key positions. The great part is, however, that Amazon is huge and movement is encouraged, so you can shop around for the great leaders.

    Advice to Management

Invest in leadership training to drive consistency across the organization and ensure those that are promoted from within are not dependent on potentially bad leaders to become successful leaders.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You will be working on projects that support or challenge other industry giants. Most of the people I meet are interesting, intelligent and kind. There are many development opportunities for improving service offerings, infrastructure and tooling in an organization as diverse as this one. There is so much to learn here. Internal tech talks are frequent and informative. Most managers I have observed have been clear about expectations. Mine have appeared to be honorable, concerned for my development as an engineer and my well being as a human.

Recent (early 2017) efforts to help identify and remedy work/life balance issues are relevant and effective.

    Cons

Amazon is an orchestrated chaos with deep internal culture. It is not that this is bad or insurmountable but for most it requires about nine months to become acclimatized.

As in many places employees must be aware of their need for life balance and can easily burn out.

The Seattle housing market is not sane. Childcare costs are staggering.

    Advice to Management

If the organization (AWS) can find ways to maintain its culture and efficacy while doing so diversification of operations geographically in the area would make it easier to find suitable candidates and work to relive the urban congestion that further growth in South Lake Union / Denny Triangle will exacerbate. Even just opening offices in Bellevue could help in terms of retention of employees who have families and those who might not otherwise be dissuaded by the job requirement of crossing Lake Washington to get to work in the morning. There are likely strong disaster recovery reasons to do this as well.
