I worked at Amazon part-time (More than a year)
good pay, easy task, no-skills necessary
quotas, poor management, long hours
I worked at Amazon part-time
The best part of the job is the people. It's a great mix of ages, races, beliefs and backgrounds. Really cool people who helped each other out. Had some great times and met good people
First and foremost no one in management seems to know what they are doing. When you have an HR question or you have to get something answered you call an 800 number which is out of the country. No one seems to understand how to get questions answered or how to get things done.
You are also told to sign a paper that allows management to NOT have you get paid for a lunch hour. Be wary of what you sign up for. It is a very strenuous job which requires lifting, moving at all times and working your buns off. You get a brief 15 minute break and they are always posting paperwork on how much you scan. It gets old after always being told that you could be "let go" at anytime if your scanning numbers are not falling into a range that they find acceptable. I initially signed up to work Thursdays through Sundays - then got hours added, then taken away, then my days switched. Management said that they didn't know how that happened - when I called the 800 number they said that management did it.. so basically you are at the mercy of the company. You are not trained. You show up and they get another co-worker to show you how things are done.. so if you pick up any bad habits or are not fully trained it can really mess you up.
Advice to Management
There are "ambassadors" who basically were there to pick up on other co-workers which is very unprofessional. If you are an older worker they pretty much ignore you - but if you are a young girl who wears yoga pants you pretty much get to do what you want there. Its also very sad that young females who are in management feel the need to have to yell, be condescending in their tone and attitude and basically make it miserable for everyone else. There were a few managers who actually stepped in and worked their tails off .. there were others who just sat in front of a computer the whole night. It really changes the vice of the work place and makes you feel unappreciated if you have managers who don't care about the people who are working there. At the end of the day Amazon is terribly cheap and not good to their employees. Pay, days and time of work were changed and everyone would act like they didn't know how that happened ... but the reality is that people need to work so they put up with it.
It was a good experience - but I would not recommend this company to anyone.
