I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Challenging work, define your own path, able to set boundaries on work/life balance, lots of talent, open to virtual/remote employees

    Cons

In a company this large it can feel overwhelming to choose one path when you look at all the things you could try to solve or improve

I worked at Amazon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You will never be bored, you are unlikely to be the smartest person in the room

    Cons

If you don't manage your time, Amazon will take all of it.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Smart people, big opportunities for growth and accomplishment, decent compensation. I'm enjoying the impactful work I get to do.

    Cons

Fast moving competitive workplace, requires independence, motivation, an ability to learn quickly, and the ability to be vocal about your ideas to be successful. I get the sense employees are always expected to be moving up, so if you're the type of person that wants to punch the clock and put in your 40 hrs, with no desire to grow and advance you may have a difficult time depending on your team culture and management.

    Advice to Management

The current promotion system is employee driven. I find that the employees who are promoted, are not necessarily the best, but sometimes those that forgo daily work and prioritize the promotion process, I wish this could be more balanced.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Actually touching products that people use Leadership principles can make bad people a little better Best customer-first company I've ever seen

    Cons

Perverse incentives that make people learn to manipulate others or give it up to people who will Super political, even in smaller orgs Culture is very invasive-- so many people drink the koolaid and it's kinda sad Stressful on the mind; many people seem like they have constant anxiety and could 'crack' at any moment No such thing as 'controlled chaos', it's just chaos for employees and then orgs clean up the messes...

    Advice to Management

Put more emphasis on hiring people and only taking on new responsibilities that the org numbers can handle; otherwise, work/life balance is (constantly) out the door and turn-over rate will continue to increase, making everyone's lives worse, both the people who stay and the people who eventually leave

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You need to be very self driven. There is very little hand holding here. A lot of respect for innovative thinkers who drive projects.

    Cons

There is not much respect for good, task oriented workers. If you do as you are told and not much else you will burn out here quickly. You must also know when to drop things on the floor because the amount of work will always be more than your time.

I worked at Amazon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working with smart people. Dynamic atmosphere. Company culture and policies drive people to push their limits and improve and grow quickly. Exciting working with cutting edge technology.

    Cons

Work/Life balance is difficult. Expected to work 60 hours minimum, plan on working late nights and weekends. Holidays are hard to schedule. Very competitive. There is a 'diplomatic throw your colleague under the bus' mentality that goes on sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Manage ambiguity better by deflecting ambiguity from the top down so engineers can get to work without wasting time. Review process is good for the most part, except the anonymous witch hunts that can occur when colleagues are seeking to get ahead at other's expense. Does not create a climate of trust for team work.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Huge amounts of autonomy and self-determination in some teams, as well as large opportunities to do new things or work on cool stuff.

    Cons

It's a massive company, so sometimes bureaucracy/politics is a pain, and too many people forget that not everyone works in the US.

    Advice to Management

Treat the non-skilled workers better; be more open regarding compensation.
