I have been working at Amazon (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work with great, smart people, in a world leading environment. You will learn a lot and be challenged a lot, and you have a lot of control of your career. Some reviews state you are expected to work hard, often and smart. It is not a direct expectation, but that behavior correlates well with successful Amazonians- who would probably do that anyway.

    Cons

To some, the pros are cons.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Working at Amazon is a great opportunity to work with the industry leader in several areas, and get an inside view into how things are done at that kind of scale.
    - Lots of very smart people work here, and if you play your cards right it's an excellent opportunity to develop your skills.

    Cons

The culture at Amazon is abhorrent. Everything is in service of the bottom line. "Frugality" is literally one of the core tenants of the company, and it's used to justify everything, from the fact that you have to provide a doctor's note to get an ergonomic desk, to the fact that the benefits and holidays are extremely weak. The latest fiasco is that Amazon is actually violating OSHA requirements for the number of available bathrooms because our office space is so insanely overpopulated. All inquiries into the matter are ignored.

Amazon doesn't even pretend to care about its employees. The company will chew you up and spit you out to be replaced by the next college graduate to go through the wringer. Essentially everyone in the company is in an oncall rotation, and be prepared to be oncall even when you're not "oncall" if you've become one of the more senior member on the team due to Amazon's legendary attrition rates.

Amazon is a decent place to develop your skills, but almost every group is a fast track to being burned out and run ragged by management.

    Advice to Management

It's really as simple as caring in the slightest about the well being of your employees. Almost all of the problems stem from completely disregarding this and driving towards maximum "efficiency".

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, never boring, fast paced, no two days are ever the same.

    Cons

No one takes responsibility for problems, no one really fixes them. Work your butt off, no overtime, expected to put in 60+ hrs a week. Very expensive area to live in. Reviews are the pits with backstabbing and co-workers who put in bad reviews to see you fall or get fired. Job description and duties will change out unless you set it in stone. Work life balance... what's that?

    Advice to Management

Dump the annual review and stack rankings. Be more flexible with people and work.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very smart group. You'll learn a lot and also contribute/teach plenty.

    Cons

Worklife balance sucks especially if you're in an operational heavy team, Project deadlines are unreal. Can be very disorganized at times. Tons of Egos but that's just the IT field in general. AWS struggles to understand what it means to be a sysEng. It seems their idea of sysEng tasks are whatever the devs cannot get to at the moment (this does not hold true for every team to be fair).

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good insurance benefits, good stock options. Work hours are flexible, WFH times are possible. Nice pay, extremely intelligent people to work around. Company paid happy hour every two weeks (Yes with EToH). If you make a mistake, own up to it and correct it without penalties to your career.

    Cons

You write it, you support it (On call to fix it too). Small teams = lots of on call time. Just getting the System Engineer support model in place to take the on call for the developers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, loosen up the purse strings on occasion.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

AWS fosters innovation. Engineers from many teams collaborate to get things done and iterate on improving the ecosystem as a whole. It's truly an amazing process to behold.

    - Always innovating.
    - Some of the best engineers in the world at your fingertips.
    - Learning never stops.
    - Diving deeper as time goes on.
    - Flexible with working from home (team dependent).
    - Fun environment.

    Cons

    - Can be incredibly stressful.
    - Workloads tend to be high and backlogs pile up quickly.
    - Incredibly high bar to get in the door, which makes team growth slow.
    - Very little learning time allocated to employees, and work tends to cut into personal time.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small and very dynamic teams. Teams can have really good independence. Ability to control your own destiny (most of the time).

    Cons

If you want to leave your mark, you'll have to sacrifice personal time.
Not much time to work on "cool stuff" as there's always something to 'scale'.

    Advice to Management

    Be frugal, not cheap.
