I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Anyone who has a drive and a will to succeed can read the Amazon Leadership Principles to understand how to excel in the work environment there. You're surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the industry. There are great opportunities to mentor and be mentored.

    Cons

Lack of repeatable, streamlined processes, very siloed environment, fiefdoms galore with competing goals and agendas. The last two are common with any large company. The first one is unique to Amazon, in my experience. "It's always Day 1" doesn't scale when you use it as an excuse not to implement lightweight process.

    Advice to Management

Understand that the software developers - while incredibly important to the success of Amazon - are not the only employees there. The culture revolves around the male-dominated SDEs. If you manage only SDEs, or are an SDE, please take some time to get to know people in other roles better, empathize and partner better with them.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

You can do almost anything and build any effective idea. Not heavy on politics. Some very smart people here and they work to ship fast.

      Cons

Often strangely organized. Easy to drown in work without clear boundaries. Some really crappy managers and directors that are good at surviving vs nurturing growth.

      Advice to Management

Be very careful about who your senior leaders are. It has a huge impact. Ensure clear lines of accountability in org chains vs dotted lines and divided divisions serving multiple vps etc.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

You are empowered to have a direct impact on customers and the business. The Sr. leadership team is generally excellent, however, there are a few exceptions that somehow made it past the hiring bar.

      Cons

Benefits are a little below average and you work long hours. One can also easily burn themselves out if not disciplined in the art of not committing and setting realistic expectations (even when unpopular).

      Advice to Management

Not everyone you hire needs to be a type A personality.
