I worked at Amazon full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Smart people. Good money. Fast paced. Many opportunities to learn.

      Cons

They will burn you out. If you are lucky enough to get a good manager, you will feel happy and excited while they burn you out. If you have a bad manager, you will resent it every step of the way. But burnout is a given. A 50 hour work week is considered a minimum in many teams. And if you aren't checking your email first thing in the morning and throughout the evening, you won't be able to keep up.

      Advice to Management

Take your diversity problem seriously. Stop blaming the "pipeline" --that is a copout. Take a look at the unconscious bias that is shot through the whole organization.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 8 years

      Pros

Fast paced environment Plenty of opportunities to learn Use cutting edge technology Fail fast and pivot quickly Emphasis on innovation Customer obsessed

      Cons

Not employee focused. Performance management policies don't encourage positive work culture - stack ranking, performance evaluated on a curve. High employee churn. Inter-team politics makes it hard to get things done.

      Advice to Management

Get rid of stack ranking and forced attrition due to performance evaluation on a curve. It does not promote healthy work environment.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

If you have ownership, bias for action and deliver results - you will find Amazon to be a fast-paced and rewarding place. Read the Leadership principles and see how you hold up. In general, they reward people for their effort and hard work and politics is usually not as toxic as some of the other companies.

      Cons

The benefits are good but not top of the line as compared to other big companies like Google. Amazon also has bad pockets like any other company. So if you land in a personal situation that requires Work-Life balance for a longer time, sometimes the best option is Leave Of Absence. Empathy is very much team specific and not supported well at the company level. The dreaded stack curve can often trip up people and lead...

      Advice to Management

Replace Stack Curve with Financial curve and provide better benefits compared to other companies.
