    I worked at Amazon full-time

    Pros

    * Lots of possibilities to move from department to department. * If you find the right team, you can learn a lot and advance in your career.

    Cons

** Cons are based on my own experience, on a specific team. YMMV ** * Old school orgs in a tech environment don't mix. If you're going to form teams of non-tech industry professionals, make sure they are able to embrace the casual environment of a tech company. Dress pants, perfectly lacquered presentation even with colleagues, the past rules of the workplace do not apply. * Don't use the Amazon principles as...

    Advice to Management

HR - Investigate the teams that have high turnover. Understand why it's happening and do something about it. Require more leadership training, take every piece of feedback from exit interviews and PIP meetings seriously and investigate. You have a responsibility to the professionals you are essentially uprooting who only want to do a job that they really want to do. Managers - You have even more of a responsibility...

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You will learn a LOT! You will get an MBA in the Cloud technologies. You will work with great people who were selected on their merit and knowledge. There's always someone to learn from.

    Cons

After the first 2 to 3 years your salary takes a hit and you will start looking to move on to another company. Amazon, for some strange reason, doesn't seem to care much about retaining professionals after that time frame.

    Advice to Management

Make data-driven decisions (which most of you do).

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Base Pay is decent for tech. 2-year signing bonus and RSUs are very attractive especially at the current value of Amazon's stock. You learn a lot and will be stretched to the limit at work, but once you get accomplish something it's a great feeling to have.

    Cons

Only get paid once a month which can make the month at work feel very long. Some teams have no sense of ownership which can be frustrating when you have no choice, but to work with them.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for less than a year

    Pros

HRBP's, and HR Managers tend to be very smart and try to help you grow as much as you can. I've learned a lot more in 3 months here than I did during college. It's a fast-paced environment and most likely different from anything you're used to as a recent college grad. You will be working in a warehouse assisting a diverse background of associates with a very wide range of problems. It can be challenging, but if you're...

    Cons

Partnering with Ops and Area Managers can be frustrating and difficult at times. Make sure you build a solid relationship with them as early as possible. You will be in constant contact with them. Associates will hit you with all sorts of different questions/problems that no amount of training can really prepare you for. Some problems are as simple as "I can't hit ctrl+alt+delete" and some are very complex and can...

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring recent college grads as Area Managers. The #1 complaint we get is from older associates complaining that some 22 year old is giving them orders without having any experience/knowledge in leading large amounts of people.

      I worked at Amazon

      Pros

They are constantly looking to refine processes and open to suggestions and improvements from employees. A lot of people you support are very passionate about getting good talent in the door and appreciate what you do. You will learn a lot about recruiting and being organized and accurate.

      Cons

Interviewers are overloaded and a dedicated few carry the most burden, leading to burnout and frustration that is taken out on the RC. RCs are told to work faster while take on more, and not let “no” be a part of their vocabulary, whereas other employees are encouraged to Have Backbone. You should not trust anyone and always keep a document trail because people look for opportunities to throw others under the bus if it...

      Advice to Management

We may not be as “high-value” as the types of candidates we are helping bring in the door but we still should be able and expected to aspire to the leadership principles and not seen as just a high turnover, disposable resource.

      Pros

Opportunity to learn a lot when launching new sites, doing migrations and building launches.

      Cons

Is very hard to get promoted, and if you are lucky enough, they will give you only a 10% pay increase maximum.
