I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've been at Amazon for a month now, and I've seen none of the horror stories being communicated to the public, although Amazon is a large enough company that I'm sure there are good pockets and bad pockets. Everyone here is really smart, and wants to succeed both personally, and as a company. People collaborate and help each other, focus on data, and truly focus on the customer. Every company I've ever worked for talks...

    Cons

No cons, so far - seriously. Like I said, I'm sure Amazon has some bad pockets in it here and there, but this is an amazing job, an amazing opportunity, and the biggest thing I have to complain about is that it's a little chilly in our building. I can live with that. Does Amazon demand high quality, measurable results? Yes! Is it hard work? Yes! Is it rewarding? Yes! So I'm not calling that a 'con'. Work/life...

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

      - You will learn something new every single day. - You will learn new skills that are outside of your comfort zone. - You can make a big impact no matter what your strengths are. - You get out, what you put in. - Promotions are generally very clear, your performance, and ability to develop/influence others dictates promotion.

      Cons

      - Some managers are very lazy, and give no effort. - Lack of accountability sometimes. (Depends on your facility) - Work Life balance is rough. They are making efforts to improve this for L4 and L5 managers. But since Ive been employeed for almost 4 years (now an L6), you will put in long hours, and pretty intense hours.

      Advice to Management

Hold everyone equally accountable. Dont allow lazy managers to coast, that increases the workload for higher performers.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

It's a unique opportunity to be a part of a company that continuously strives to foster a start-up environment at the scale Amazon does. Amazon does well with maintaining the hiring bar, and thus you are surrounded by people smarter than you in every team you'll work with. Innovation is encouraged at micro and macro levels and data-driven decisions are made rapidly to mitigate stagnation. Opportunities to identify and...

The fast pace and need to maintain aggressive growth rates creates a challenging environment for employees to keep up in. Work-life balance can be difficult to maintain. I am lucky to be in a team with excellent leaders that strive to preserve work-life balance and who genuinely look to create a fun and rewarding culture for everyone....

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

I love the space to innovate, have your ideas heard despite your level (so long as you're a strong writer), and the ability to define your career by voicing the products/projects/initiatives you want to work on. You have to be comfortable with ambiguity though. Often times your manager can't tell you what specifically you should be focusing on or what's the right next move - it's on you. People I've seen struggle at Amazon...

      Cons

You need to be the type of person who owns your career to thrive here. Amazon isn't going to pull you along in career development, you need to network and create your own growth plan. You also need to draw your own lines in terms of work-life balance and set that expectation from the beginning with yourself and your team, only disrupting the balance occasionally as required.

      Advice to Management

Bring in the SMEs to help make big decisions. There's a lot of expertise at some of the lower levels.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

I work with a lot of talented people that are passionate about what they do. Everyone really puts the end customer first which makes decision making in meetings pretty easy to do. Work life balance is typically pretty good. There are always times, as with any job, where you need to buckle down and put in the extra work.

      Cons

The "fail fast" mantra of Silicon Valley does not apply. I have found that those in leadership roles take Amazon's "Be Right, A Lot" Leadership Principle quite literally. Failure of experiments is seen as such, a failure. It is not seen as a good thing in the teams I have been on. It is seen as a failure of the individual or team that proposed and implemented. Compensation and benefits are very much lacking. The financial...

Probably the best lead/business development job you could have in Tech. I swear I'm not an AWS HR person.

I have been working at Amazon full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      * Strong product culture: one of the best in tech, actually. If you've read Inspired by Marty Cagan, Amazon is a good representation. * Great leadership: Amazons managers are great to work with and learn from. As a whole, the company truly lives up to its principles at every level of the organization, every day. * Seattle is a central location for big tech - Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Expedia, Zillow, Redfin,...

      Cons

Work/life balance - this is not the place to work if you're expecting a strict 9-to-5 schedule. True ownership of results comes at a price. That said, I find it very easy to have work/life "harmony"
