I have been working at Ameren (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great; most people are engaged and in it for the long-haul. We say "Ameren Family" a lot and it's completely true; people care. Currently focused on Innovating for the future. Lots of retirees so room for movement in some departments.

    Cons

Bureaucratic; many layers; takes a long time to get things approved; strong unions that seem to control management; business units control Sourcing.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to employees about innovation; keep communicating, don't be afraid to make decisions.

I have been working at Ameren full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Employees are very passionate about what they do whether they are lineman or support staff. You work with smart people every day.

    Cons

Culture is inconsistent across the organization. Business practices are that should be common in all areas are not because a leader has always done it a certain way. Some employees want to be innovate and change but still there are many that have been at the organization for 20-25+ years and don't know how or don't want to do things any other way. You have to be resilient to make progress even on things that would be easy "yes" at other organizations

    Advice to Management

When you ask "How does X do this?" or "What does everyone else do?", this doesn't spur innovating thinking. Instead, ask "Help me understand why this is better than what others are doing?" or "Why will our customers value this more?"

I have been working at Ameren full-time

    Pros

The company has good health benefits, but no training really. You have to learn everything the hard way by doing it wrong and hoping it doesn't go REALLY wrong so you'll be around to learn and do it right the next time.

    Somewhat stable

    Name recognition

    Cons

Workloads are ridiculous with new continuous improvement policies, employees left feeling hopeless and moral is at rock bottom.

    Bad vacation policy

Engineers should unionize like Boeing engineers, engineers are dumped on and if you don't get it done you're on your own, no one's getting hired to help. Basically you're fired or you have to quit.

    Advice to Management

Hire some people and stop outsourcing everything, there will be nobody left that works for "Ameren" pretty soon!

I have been working at Ameren full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, security. Most people are great to work with. Quite a few don't seem like they have anything constructive to accomplish. Salaries are fairly competitive. Benefits are outstanding

    Cons

Focus on "HR" teamwork, etc. Constant diversity training, continuous improvement efforts, team building doesn't leave much time to actually get work done. Very limited opportunities for advancement. Too much focus on optics.

    Advice to Management

Need to let employees focus on job
