I worked at AmeriCorps part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Positive team environment
    Ongoing training opportunities
    Group bounding was a priority

    Cons

Lack of materials / funding on passion
Short staffed teams in large classrooms

    Advice to Management

Keep on keeping on, the mission is flawless. Fund will always be in issue with reliance on donations and government budgeting.

I worked at AmeriCorps part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

AmeriCorps members receive the benefit of joining a nation-wide community, with access to resources through AmeriCorps alum, community events, etc. My site also did a fantastic job advocating for my well-being while serving with my host organization.

    Cons

I was placed with an organization that should not have qualified for an AmeriCorps service member and was often asked to do work that was beyond the designated work for service members. AmeriCorps was not aware of this until halfway through my term and by then there was nothing to change.

    Advice to Management

Please create a safer venue through which AmeriCorps members may contact their AmeriCorps supervisor. I often found that I had to do things through my host organization supervisor, and she was a big part of the issues that were coming up so it put me in a situation where it was uncomfortable to report what was happening.

I worked at AmeriCorps as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

AmeriCorps was able to push me beyond what I knew I was capable of doing- working and living through all types of weather. I learned a lot that is helping me advance my career. Additionally, the education award that I received at the end of the program has helped me to afford classes that will prepare me for graduate school. This program is for those who want to make a positive difference, and who needs some time to figure out what they want to do with their lives, all while learning invaluable skills.

    Cons

Very, very low pay, although you don't join AmeriCorps to get rich.

    Advice to Management

Ask for budget increases. Improve outreach so that Americans learn about AmeriCorps- many people are unaware of the services we provide.

I have been working at AmeriCorps full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Team-based, Traveling around region, Educational award

    Cons

Little living allowance, many things take a long time to process, not a lot of 'wiggle' room if you have to work on weekends.

    Advice to Management

    More personal days

I have been working at AmeriCorps full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a wide variety of programs and organizations across the country to serve with, and it is a great way to get experience in a new field as a recent graduate.

    Cons

Your experience as a VISTA depends entirely on your site placement, not the national AmeriCorps program. The living allowance is also a barrier to many people entering the program.

I have been working at AmeriCorps full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Offered me a great chance to develop and apply my research skills for a state government agency and meaningfully impact policy. A good choice of a gap year program.

    Cons

The pay is intended to be poverty level. Not suitable for those with low savings or unaccustomed to frugal living.

    Advice to Management

My management experience was good. The people I worked under were kind and thoughtful about my financial situation and liked to try and throw free food my way when possible. Sometimes nonprofit employees can be a little uninspired but generally they do their best and strive for innovation.
