I worked at America's Small Business Development Center part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked here while going to school. The SBDC is a great place to learn more if you are working part time on the center as a student. You have the chance to meet with many different types of people, clients, and work in a cross functional team.

    Cons

As a student worker, I didn't receive any benefits. I don't mind, it was still very valuable experience and learned a lot through my time there.

    Pros

Very flexible, good for resume instead of a silly campus GA job

    Cons

No real value added, very slow on most days

    Advice to Management

Try to structure an intern's work better instead of just leaving them out there to go on facebook all day

I have been working at America's Small Business Development Center part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

SBDCs are often (maybe always? I'm not sure) affiliated in some way with universities in their region. This provides students who are fortunate enough to get their foot in the door the opportunity to get both quality and quantity of real-world consulting experience that is incredibly difficult for students to obtain elsewhere. Other pros: my supervisors are wonderful, they allow me to be flexible in my hours and occasionally work remotely. Regional Director really goes to bat bringing in only projects that will be valuable learning experiences, and Associate Director is an excellent support system as well.

    Cons

Even my boss acknowledges that the students in my position bring more worth to the company than they are able to pay, and doesn't seem to be much opportunity for post-university employment with the SBDC itself as it's a very small office with mostly part-time consultants. I don't REALLY consider these things major cons, but since you asked.

    Advice to Management

Keep on allowing regional offices to make decisions regarding hiring and everyday workings of their areas! Seems to work well.
