I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent environment, good salaries for a society, continuous consistent reviews as one of the top places to work by employees and ratings by Chicago area, good opportunities for advancement. Excellence benefits with bonuses when year end goals of organization are met. Flexible hours and opportunities to work from home.

    Cons

Location and difficult and potentially (during rush hour) long time commute from the city of Chicago. Difficult to use public transportation.

I have been working at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, working hours, friendly and knowledgeable colleagues, opportunities to provide value, embrace individual development, and having personal satisfaction in outcome, activities, and goals of the Academy and its members.

    Cons

Elements of a dated culture, hourly feel, dated vacation policy. Still some business silo effects and lack of transparency outside of departments to staff but this seems to be changing.

    Advice to Management

Dr. Karen Remley, keep up the good work and promoting the changes

    Pros

AAP is a superb company to work for. The staff is very welcoming and supportive. One of the best companies I have worked for.

    Cons

If there was a downside, it would be wishing they had a permanent position.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with your fabulous programs!

I have been working at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance, dedicated employees working towards the mission, new CEO with a great vision.

    Cons

Some employees are upset about moving to Itasca, they need to stop complaining and appreciate how good they have it at the AAP.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Ultimately, the people you will work with are really nice, although it's not an especially social environment. If you're lucky, you'll have the chance to work with some of the pediatrician volunteers, who are amazing and the primary reason the Academy is still solvent.

    Cons

Hyper-political environment that detracts from the ostensible mission (i.e. helping children all over the world). The pediatricians running the show are brilliant physicians, but that doesn't make for brilliant business professionals. Senior leadership (director level and above) is a little too set in their ways to really make progress and, when challenged, have a tendency to defer responsibility and blame other areas of leadership, which can be very disheartening to lower-level employees.

    Advice to Management

The culture is in need of a major overhaul if you expect to attract and retain young talent. Develop some career tracks so that you can bring in ambitious--i.e., rather than complacent--employees.

"Mission is wonderful, upper management, not so much."

I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation is on the high side for the association world.
The mission is noble and the emphasis on children, not just physicians, is great.
    Benefits were decent.
    Work life balance good.
    Location great for suburban living.
Members were wonderful and really cared about their work.

    Cons

HR is not there to support employees.
Upper management is very out of touch, not supportive of employees, and not accessible
Culture has changed for the worse in the past few years.
There is no room for advancement in most departments.
Although it is supposedly a member organization, staff's hands are often tied in being able to do what would be most beneficial to members.
Promotions are done internally whenever possible, often to the detriment of the organization.
Too many employees have been there a long time doing the bare minimum.

    Advice to Management

Attend some of the training that you require staff to attend (e.g. change management). It is pointless for staff to learn how to make change if leadership won't buy into it.
Listen to your employees- they often know more than you.
    Provide more training for managers.
    Implement a 360 review process.
Get rid of dead weight (i.e. employees who barely know how to do their jobs)

I have been working at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working on content that will help save the lives of children is very rewarding, and the work-life balance is great with this organization. The benefits package is excellent! For those who like quiet workspaces, this is a great place to work.

    Cons

Unfortunately, because this is a nonprofit organization, a lot of promotions and upward mobility has to be approved through HR, meaning many requests for new positions and promotions are often denied. Most managers are competent, but some managers and executive-level staff are disorganized and disconnected from day-to-day operations. Building is located in a far Chicago suburb (and execs are considering moving further), making it difficult to commute without a car. IT department mostly focused on control over networks as opposed to being supportive of staff needs.

    Advice to Management

Consider not moving to Itasca, make the all staff meetings more informative, and consider reworking the HR approval process. The latter is probably the number one reason why I'm considering leaving this organization.

I worked at American Academy Of Pediatrics full-time

    Pros

Mission makes you feel you are doing something for the common good; benefits competitive with for-profit companies; good location in terms of ease of access and parking

    Cons

    Non-profit makes it harder to spend money; not a good location for using public transit;

    Advice to Management

Trust your staff to know what they are doing
