    Cons

Use of travel benefits can be a small challenge depending on which destination yet not impossible.

    Not worth it...It's horrible...run away

Jun 8, 2022 - Home Based Reservations Representative in Miami, FL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval

    Pros

Travel benefits (but you'll never have time to use them)

    Cons

Pathetic pay at $13.05/ hr. in super expensive Miami. Mandatory overtime is horrible. Customers are rude. Other department are condescending and treat you like you're an idiot. Training doesn't prepare you for the 'real' phone calls. Travel benefits sound great but alas you will never have a chance to use them. Weather, cancellations, over-booking, under-staffing, and maintenance issues will keep you on the ground. It's not worth it at all.

    Tenure with American Airlines

Feb 15, 2015 - Manager in Dallas, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Overall it was a great company to work for with excellent travel and medical benefits. Salaries have not been competitive over the years relative to the industry however due to the AA/US merger salaries and wages have now become more competitive.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for advancement as the work environment was always political and the culture very traditional.

Unclear expectations and poor vacation policy for management

Jun 14, 2018 - Customer Service Manager in Fort Worth, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The flight benefits are incredible; free standby travel worldwide for employee and immediate family. Pay is considerably higher than similar position at other airlines or contractors. Wide variety of tasks from day to day, from employee discipline and engagement to assisting agents at gates and ticket counter.

    Cons

CSMs and other managers in operational roles do not get any holidays off or comp time in lieu of holidays worked -- only 2 weeks of vacation plus two floating holidays per year. Meanwhile, the agents we manage get 4 weeks of vacation after their first year. The flight benefits are not that useful with only 2 days off per week and 2 weeks of vacation. Expectations are unclear for attendance/start time and tasks to be done during a shift.

    Great place to work at

May 26, 2021 - Customer Service Agent in Washington, DC
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Is a great place to work at with great travel benefits for friends and family. Part time agents get full health, 401k and retirement benefits same as full timers. Is easy to work out your schedule, if you want to make money you can pick up shifts and if you want to work less just drop them.

    Cons

Some people I worked with were bitter and overworked. They’ve been with the company forever and are only there because there’s nothing else they know how to do.

    Very stressful but accomplishing.

Nov 4, 2013 - Reservations Agent in Dallas, TX

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The benefits is for my life time as long as I am able to travel.

    Cons

I am Retired and they closed the desk that we used to buy our ID90 discount for flying between the Hawaiian Island. They said we would have to book on our Jet Net. com. But I did not find the info needed to apply for ID90's within Jet Net. I still cannot use this benefit for future travel and I was advised I would have to call The American Airlines Travel line to do that and now I don't have a phone number to call them. It is a big run-around.

    Tech challenged leadership

Nov 26, 2021 - Senior Applications Architect in Fort Worth, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work/Life balance is good so a great place to start your IT career. Opportunities to Travel. Great health insurance.

    Cons

Both leadership & management have a hard time understanding Technology curves. Tech teams work in silos. IT Managers are often low skilled with non-IT background. Not a destination for tech heavy mid-career professionals looking to grow as you are more likely to get burnt out with mundane work and hit a wall vis-a-vis career growth. Pay is also at the low end of the spectrum. Travel benefits is a plus but sparse availability of seats makes traveling on 'stand by' a nightmare. Multigenerational workforce causes frequent 'culture fart' moments.

Wake up and listen to the real world needs of the employees and it will reward you!!

    Dec 30, 2008 - Pilot, First Officer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Travel benefits can be good but aircraft are now so full that it has become a worthless benefit.

    Cons

Management micromanages their employees and gives little opportunity to advance asa pilot unless you are a Captain. That leaves current 20 year First Officers not able to do more for the company strictly because of seniority and nothing about job placement is based on credentials and a person ability to really perform. Second, managers are not held accountable for their mistakes while they hold the employee to the highest degree of accountability for anything they do wrong.

It has been good company to work for, but I'm concerned about the future.

Aug 26, 2014 - Senior Analyst in Fort Worth, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Since it is a large company there are a lot of opportunities to move around and try positions that are of interest to you. For those who like to travel the flight benefits are nice although it can be difficult getting on a flight.

    Cons

The merger has created some issues since the 2 companies have very different cultures and ways of doing things. There are people on both sides who don't care to listen to what the other sides has to say which has caused a divide

Who flies the world? Girls! 🛩️ History is in the making at this year’s Women in Aviation International Conference as we welcomed the first female American Airlines Cadet Academy graduates into our mainline flight deck. This milestone not only continues to diversify our pilot ranks, but secures the future of our airline’s pilot population. We’re excited to partner with #WAI to encourage and advance women through mentoring, education, networking and scholarship. Welcome to the #AATeam!

When you see it, you can be it! Last week, we teamed up with Mattel, Inc. to surprise customers with Bessie Coleman dolls from the Inspiring Women line on one of our flights. Bessie Coleman was the first Black and Native American female to earn a pilot’s license in 1921. A true pioneer in aviation who taught us the sky is just the beginning. To keep the inspiration going, our #AATeam hosted a unique event for aviation students at the Ronald E. McNair public school 5 in Brooklyn, New York — a place designed to encourage youth to follow and build upon Bessie Coleman’s rich legacy. Students could hear firsthand from Bessie’s great niece, Gigi Coleman, and test their skills on flight simulators guided by members of our #AATeam. And, to really drive home the excitement, each of the students was presented with a Bessie Coleman doll to remind them that you can accomplish anything if you let your dreams take flight. #LetGoodTakeFlight
