I have been working at American Apparel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They provide a clothing allowance, flexible hours, 401k, and benefits. They also provide a chance at a monthly clothing allowance as long you hit sales goals.

    Cons

Its retail sales. The company is facing bankruptcy. Only allowed to wear American Apparel clothing while working. Paid bi-weekly.

    Advice to Management

More open communication with store managers.

I worked at American Apparel full-time

    Pros

I started off as a sales associate in 2013. There was a lot of room for growth at the time and you can definitely work your way up. I had managers that appreciated your work and what you did for the store. You get to meet and work with great people.

    Cons

Some district managers weren't qualified for their position. Lacked communication and blamed store managers and employees for not doing a specific task but it was their fault for not communicating properly in the first place. District managers were fake and condescending for no reason. They didn't know how to properly evaluate employees. Didn't treat them fairly with respect. They blame employees for something wrong and point it out all the time. But if employees do something right, district managers do not show appreciate or give thanks.

    Advice to Management

Think about who you transfer to district management team and how they treat employees. No district manager should be condescending, rude, and fake if they care about the organization and want it to strive. They only think about themselves.

I worked at American Apparel part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The best part of working here, in my experience, was the coworkers I had! Despite a high turnover rate, I had a lot of great opportunities to work with a lot of fun and positive people. The employee discount is also really great and there are seasonal clothing allowances so it's easy to wear all AA. The work isn't all that demanding although you might be in charge of multiple duties (ex: being a cashier/MOD/and helping with backstock). It's fairly lax, however, especially when everyone is trained at the same level and can perform the same duties.

    Cons

In my time working there there were A LOT of managers. I had about 6 and a majority of them were fantastic but left for other career/school opportunities. There was only one terrible manager who had been in the company for 6 years and totally soured my experience. Albeit being a "good" manager and keeping the store under control, she was a complete tyrant and managed the store in a very passive-aggressive manner. It's pretty shocking that this type of management is present in a retail store location where most employees are fairly young. Again, this was my only sour experience. I have found that managers hired after the AA scandal tended to run their stores more diplomatically while those who were around before the scandal were probably taught to run a store through intimidation and cattiness.

    Advice to Management

Nix employees who obviously have a bad reputation for treating workers poorly.

I worked at American Apparel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Day/Night shift hours, give more when they need you

    Cons

the company as a whole, internally, it a mess. Late responses to everything. EXTREME turn over rate. Everyone is fearing for the jobs all the time because of money, and possible bankruptcies You're always getting paperwork about law suites being mailed to you. Upper management usually feels like a joke, a bunch of hipster working with each other and pulling favors.
