I have been working at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have been here about 4 months and love it here. The atmosphere is very learned, collaborative and focused on quality. Very smart people work here. The benefits outpace the "best places to work" list. Despite the oil & gas downturn, this place is still hopping. I'm very lucky to work here!

    Cons

Excited about moving away from Greenspoint to the new Exxon Mobil campus.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and innovation.

I have been working at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Well respected technical organization with a rich history. Many highly competent people work at ABS from diverse backgrounds. Company has a global reach and the work is interesting.

    Cons

The CEO and his hired buddies (retired USCG and US Navy cheifs) are bringing ABS to its knees. They lack the vision to survive the current downturn and remain relavent when the industry turns around. Too many useless VPs, poor investments in the wrong technology, questionable new graduate hiring schemes, insisting on centralization when we work in perhaps the most global industry there is..

I understand current downsizing due to a collapsed offshore oil/gas industry and stagnant global shipping market. However the approach to layoffs is cruel and damaging - honest, hardworking employees (some with 20+ yrs service) escorted out of the building like criminals in front their peers. It's horrible and employee morale has suffered. It's no longer an enjoyable place to work.

ABS employees are the company's only real asset. Senior mgt used to understand this, but these days employees are perceived and treated as risks.

    Advice to Management

    Resign.

I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great group of professionals.
    Great benefits.
    Room to grow.

    Cons

ABS used to be a great company to work for, that value their employee; however, around 2014 it seems that upper management in HR was doing a lot of changes that were seeking more the company than its employees.
ABS does not invest so much in external training.
    Low compensations.
