I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people at ABS are knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. Salaries are good; benefits are excellent. Great opportunities for foreign assignments if interested, especially for engineers or field staff (surveyors).

    Cons

Management has changed and become less personal. The company has had significant layoffs to reduce staff costs over the past 2 years and lost some very qualified employees.

    Advice to Management

Employees are your most important asset.

I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time

    Pros

Many international opportunities, the opportunity to work with very experienced and knowledgeable people.

    Cons

Job security and loyalty to employees has greatly eroded in recent years.

    Advice to Management

Keep to the core mission as an independent third party. The organization has become much too concerned about revenue and less concerned about impartial evaluation.

I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn and at one time was a great company to work for. Having a company car as a surveyor was great.

    Cons

Like I said above it was a great place to work at one time. The current CEO has changed all that and surrounded himself with people that are to afraid to question a flawed leader. It all about KPI's (Key Performance Indices) and if your below on one of them your in the cross-hairs of management. Also, as a compliance centered company, they have the worst safety, environmental, and quality systems.

    Advice to Management

Your not a billion dollar company so stop acting like one. With it being a not for profit organization and not having any shareholders split the CEO and chairman position. This would give greater oversight and control when you have CEO like there is now.

I worked at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

No Pros to this company anymore with the new CEO. They offer nothing to new employees to make them want to stay.

    Cons

ABS used to be a good company to work for. This is no longer the case with the current CEO and his cronies. They offer the employees nothing and no reason to stay since this CEO has taken over. To this CEO, the employees are useless. It's really sad to see this. I am so happy to no longer work at this company with this CEO.

    Advice to Management

    Resign!

I have been working at American Bureau of Shipping full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Covered parking, eateries close by, close to 45 and the beltway

    Cons

Management lacks forward thinking when it comes to retaining good employees. Promotes those who are undeserving while overlooking those that should be. What came of the employee survey? Absolutely nothing!

    Advice to Management

360 feedback should be implemented so all employees can rate their manager. If employees can be candid and know they won't be retaliated against, maybe real change could come. This is especially critical to Director level and up. They seem to follow different standards then those below them and not in a positive way. I guess it's that "entitled" way of thinking that gets in their way.
