I worked at American Cancer Society full-time

    Pros

There is a consistent focus on the mission, which is to help people with cancer to get well and stay well; to support research to find cures for cancer; and to advocate for people with cancer to get access to care. There are so many great programs under the umbrella of the ACS that should be known to everyone. Besides all the support programs available and the focus on research, there are more than 30 Hope Lodges across the nation that provide free stays for patients and caregivers from out of town so that they can get the treatment they need. This is truly a wonderful, life-saving organization with the most committed people I've ever worked with.

    Cons

For most of the years I worked at ACS, there was a reorganization effort underway. Although changes needed to be made, the fact that there were many layoffs gave employees a feeling of insecurity and uncertainty about their futures. There is also a hierarchy there, and many people (who are talented and have much to offer) feel excluded from the "mix."

    Advice to Management

Figure out the structure that works, and go forward. Constant change is not conducive to productivity or employee satisfaction.

    Pros

The cause and the passion of the volunteers really inspires you and makes you want to do your best.

    Cons

Management is always restructuring and reducing workforce. Puts more burden and work on those that are still there.

    Pros

Flexible work environment. Great manager! Working with volunteers was a wonderful experience. Great mission and team environment

    Cons

The re-organization has left employees working more for the same amount of money. Many of the event staff did not have enough hours in the day before the reorganization. Worried about the future of the organization from the volunteers standpoint. All the focus on fundraising and less focus on customer service and education in the communities.

    Pros

The benefits are great here. My co-workers and manager are amazing! Fulfilling work, you know every dollar brought in is helping patients in need or going to research.

    Cons

Not much room for promotion or pay increases. Continually are doing transformations and gaining and losing positions. Most recently with the transformation, management is very focused on managers being placed in certain markets or cities, which limits opportunity for growth. Hardly any training when starting here.

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible in locations managers can be placed, currently there is hardly any room for growth. Promote from within, don't hire externally for management positions when you have great internal candidates.

    Pros

Great benefits and PTO, Developing relationships with awesome volunteers that share your passion for our mission, helping to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by funding research, flexible schedule during the day

    Cons

working nights and weekends several months of the year-because you are working around the volunteers' schedules for meetings and fundraisers, heart breaking stories daily, cancer sucks and you don't feel like you can ever do enough!
