I have been working at American Cancer Society full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent mission, and if you work in that part of the org it's very meaningful. Great pay for a nonprofit and fantastic benefits. Coworkers are generally cool. You learn a lot and work with some smart people.

    Cons

More than 8 years of change with very little recognition or support for established employees. Low morale after so much change.

    Advice to Management

More transparency, more career opportunities, more adherence to mission and organizational values. can't let marketing run amok.

    Pros

Flexible work environment. Great manager! Working with volunteers was a wonderful experience. Great mission and team environment

    Cons

The re-organization has left employees working more for the same amount of money. Many of the event staff did not have enough hours in the day before the reorganization. Worried about the future of the organization from the volunteers standpoint. All the focus on fundraising and less focus on customer service and education in the communities.

I worked at American Cancer Society (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Wonderful mission is the only positive.

    Cons

ACS is losing market share in the non profit sector and not doing well financially. Therefore, this is not a positive place to work. It's stressful, everyone is always worried about the security of their jobs, and the environment is depressing.

During my ten year tenure at ACS, I experienced 4 significant organizational changes. Everyone I worked with was always in constant fear of losing their job. They let people go on a whim, and that's created a culture of fear and uncertainty. Perhaps the most difficult thing is that the management is so out of touch with how low the morale is. There is a major disconnect that the executives choose to be completely oblivious to.

There is also no upward mobility. So if you are lucky enough to not get eliminated through constant reorganization, the opportunity to move up is non existent... The internal politics can also be difficult to navigate and impossible to avoid. Management is very two faced, inconsistent, and lacks direction and clarity.

If you are a high performer who wants to be successful professionally, this isn't a place for you.

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of the sand and start listening to your employees. The morale is low, the productivity is even lower as a result. Stop constantly changing priorities. Outline a career path for high performers.
