I have been working at American Century Investments full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The position has good job security and most of the folks are nice to work with. Generous PTO and the management is overall supportive.

    Cons

If you are genuinely interested in finance and economics, it is often hard to dive into those conversations with the average investor, thus there is often a lack of engagement from intelligent reps.
It is a call center, therefore, you are managed down to the very minute of your day. Over my course of my time there, a paradigm shift has moved from being client centric with excellent funds to micro-management focused approach with a strong push for the bottom-line.

It is nice to be rewarded for performance but often times the statistics do not show the whole picture, selling of solutions is a big part of the incentive plan and is heavily considered, which is sometimes stressful to balance.

More responsibilities have been pressed toward the investment reps ( the front-lines) to start working pieces of other positions but without the compensation portion which comes from folks in that position.

A lot of people love working there but at the end of the day functions as a call center, however, wants to be a lot more.

    Pay is average.

    Advice to Management

The middle managers seem to work very diligently and care about the team of reps on the floor. However, the managers above do not seem to really understand the day to day life of a rep on the floor and the incentives reflect this...

I worked at American Century Investments full-time

    Pros

People you work with are genuine and work hard

    Cons

Leadership is tanking the company and devaluing Mr. Stowers legacy. They are hiring people from NY and East Coast that don't care about midwest values

I have been working at American Century Investments full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits--PTO 24 days to start, Cigna health insurance, bonus is minute--but still helps, 529 match.

    Cons

Good old boys club. It is an older crowd who have worked together for years.

    Advice to Management

Listen to new ideas. Provide a chance or at least perception for upward mobility.

I have been working at American Century Investments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Mostly great benefits, most of the people are really nice.

    Cons

Culture has shifted, not as family-friendly anymore, more focused on the bottom line, people are not widely appreciated for skills/experience they bring to the table, education to further ones self is not as valued as it used to be.

    Advice to Management

Focus on and appreciate the employees more - happy employees means a better workplace and relates to increased focus on making the client successful.

    Pros

Generous PTO as well as time off for new dads. Loved the people I worked with. We all practicallly grew up together there. Mr. Stowers built such a great company and was so incredibly friendly and personable to everyone. It felt like a family there for a long time. Had to quit because spouse got a job in another state.

    Cons

Once new top management came in, things changed. More corporate, less family-like.

I worked at American Century Investments full-time

    Pros

Just over 40% of the company's profits go to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. This is the type of organization its founders established, one that gives back to the community. There are many good people still leading the firm, but they are now only in pockets of the organization.

    Cons

The culture of how leadership manages people shifted from one focused on developing and nurturing people of high character to one focused on external talent with disparate values. This has resulted in a revolving door for many parts of the organization and lower morale. I left the firm several years ago, but I consistently receive unsolicited feedback from those inside the company who are saddened by the effect short-term, outside leaders have wrought on the organization.

    Advice to Management

In the same way long term investing is based on sound fundamentals, so should be management of talent. You once had people's minds and hearts.

I worked at American Century Investments as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

People were friendly and welcoming, pay was good. Work-life balance wasn't great for being an intern. A weekend here or there would be expected, and working late was common.

    Cons

Company culture wasn't doing so great. There seemed to be growing discontent among many people.
