Will throw you into the fire mentality. Training and morale could use some work.

I worked at American Commercial Lines full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

pay, rotation, time off, and the food

    Cons

    pay check wasnt always accurate

    Advice to Management

Management needs a breath of fresh air! By placing new younger people in position that would allow you men/woman that retirement your tweeking for because you don't stand for the employee's. Maybe everyone working the office should go do a 28/14 day hitch for 2 trips and see how you would learn to identify with thee employee's after.

Great company to work for competitive salary and benefits. Top of the line training program. Great people to work with. Family environment

    Cons

Takes a while to move up. The industry is not doing so well right now. Being away from home. Being outside in the elements

I worked at American Commercial Lines full-time

    Pros

Decent food, 401k plan, paid time off.

    Cons

Working for a jerk of a captain, no phone service, 40 hrs a week and more is considered overtime on land, for acbl you work up to 84 hrs a week with no overtime pay, back breaking work, no sleep,no women, Bring plenty of porn, if you have a new wife or new girlfriend you can kiss her goodbye because when you come back there will be another guy there, seen that happen to alot of men that work there not a pretty picture.

    Advice to Management

Keep making the big bucks, because your employees aint making jack. Exactly why i quit

    Pros

The equipment and people are pretty good. They'll train you for any career path you may decide to go if you are reliable and serious about your career. The pay is competitive and they offer flexible work rotations depending your preference of mainline or fleet vessels. Upper management is solid.

    Cons

The medical insurance is expensive and the coverage could be better. They do offer a competitive 401k but don't have a pension plan based on years of service.

    Advice to Management

Negotiate for a better and lesser expensive medical plan for your employees. Put together some kind of retirement plan based on years of service to compliment the 401k so the decision to eventually retire won't depend on the status of the market.

I have been working at American Commercial Lines (More than a year)

    Pros

The company welcomes newcomers, that have not necessarily had experience in the marine industry, and are willing to train.

    Cons

There are not many opportunities for growth within the company, unless you are apart of the boat crew (i.e. deckhand, tanker man, pilot, captain).

I have been working at American Commercial Lines full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working at ACL is the people you work with. You make friends, and everyone is very supportive. People try very hard to be good at their jobs. Management team knows what they are doing in a difficult to understand industry.

    Cons

Sometimes the work can be monotonous depending on the position you are in. The business itself is susceptible to risks that are outside the management's control, particularly the weather, which can negatively impact bonuses despite doing a great job.

    Advice to Management

Though it's and old company, try to think of new ways to innovate in the industry. Invest in up to date technology.
