I worked at American Conservation Experience full-time

Decent hours and management would be relatively reasonable

    Cons

I worked at American Conservation Experience full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    As a corps member you:
Get to travel all over the region you are stationed in to many amazing parks and public lands.
Make friends that will last a lifetime.
Get field experience and potentially your foot in the door for conservation jobs.
    Have housing provided.

    Cons

    Corps Member stipend is low.
Upper management does not communicate well with lower management and corps members. Lots of miss-communication or non at all.
There are upper management that are very disconnected from the members. Many members never know or met the majority of the staff.
If you work in the office you will be lucky to have time off. They claim it is "flexible" which equates to odd hours, weekends, and multiple weeks without two days off in a row.
Lots of big promises to corps members about professional development that never happen.
Again big disconnect - some corps members get more attention than others while some long-time members never get advanced trainings even though they've been there a year or so.
Mentality of "fighting fires" instead of preventing them.
    Mostly talk and little action.
Expected to do multiple people's jobs at little pay.
Understaffed with high turn over rate. Interview process can take weeks or months. When people leave and give notice management doesn't start hiring until they already left.

    Advice to Management

The entire office should be introduced to new corps members and accessible to them.
Communication needs to be better to the corps members about scheduling and trainings while communication between staff themselves needs to be improved.
    Hire more staff.

I worked at American Conservation Experience (Less than a year)

    Pros

Personal growth and lifelong friendships gained.

    Cons

I did an internship through AmeriCorps. After finishing ACE, I felt like I had not gained experience to help further a career in environmental conservation. More professional development would be helpful.

I have been working at American Conservation Experience full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You meet some wonderful, unique people and get to work in very beautiful areas. You may even learn a thing or two about conservation.

    Cons

The pay is terrible, housing is dangerous if you have anything valuable, and the full time employees never seem to know what is going on.

    Advice to Management

Make a more useful hierarchy of management to keep each level responsible. There seems to be too many people at the same level which leads to confusion in who to ask for things as a corps member.

I worked at American Conservation Experience full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You meet some pretty amazing people along the way.

    Cons

ACE and the PCTA treat crew members like cattle. They seem to forget people are volunteering their time for 200 dollars every two weeks. They promote themselves as selfless environmentalists. The truth is it's all about the money for them.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees. Appreciate their time and effort.

I worked at American Conservation Experience full-time

    Pros

ACE offers a fast-paced environment with varied work. There are numerous opportunities to travel. Staff welcome innovative approaches to problem solving. Fantastic office locations, flexible work hours.

    Cons

Flexible work hours is a positive but the flip-side is that work goes home with you, in that sense the hours can be quite extended, and weekend work common.

    Advice to Management

As American Conservation Experience continues to grow and expand, don't lose sight of how ACE started--Collaborate and work together.
