    Pros

opportunities for advancement, depending on department
opportunities to learn - career path planning, ongoing training

    Cons

the level of leadership really depends on what department you work - some have better leadership than others (Call Center Operatons and Tech were good; Business Operations, not so much)

    Advice to Management

don't be afraid to get rid of bad management (bands 35 to 60)
I reported to a band 40 who had been with the company 20+ years - she was the worst leader I had during my tenue at Amex - she was also the last . She wasn't a leader - she was a boss - and I don't work with bosses, I work with leaders. I believe she's an example of getting passed along just because shes been around a long time - one must posses leadership skills.

I worked at American Express full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the nicest people in the world to work with; employees care about doing a good job and work hard

    Cons

They have laid off (fired) thousands of people, especially in the IT department - these are Americans with families to support - only to give their jobs to Indian immigrants who are here on work visas and are paid only half what the employees they fired were making. These people live 20 to a condo, sleep on floors, and will do anything to make money to send back home - it's not their fault that they want a better life. But a company that fires thousands of people at one time (therefore making it impossible for them all to find new jobs) just to make more money so the top people can make millions more each year is horrible. Myself and others took more than one year to find new jobs - and then its contract work with no benefits -- after years of being loyal workers . They should be ashamed.

    Advice to Management

How many millions do you need to make? How about being a true "American" company and looking after the American employees who have families to raise and have always done a good job for you. There is nothing more humiliating than having to train your replacement -- who is Indian and being paid only half of what you were making --- to take your job. Greed is ruining the middle class and all of America.

    Pros

Brilliantly supportive employers, great flexible working arrangements, bonus days off in the summer, ability to work remotely, great development opportunities.

    Cons

Often tied up in processes conducted in a remote office in another country with no available information on how to contact them - can make basic admin tasks very frustrating.
