I worked at American Express as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Tend to promote from within
    -Strong sense of culture
-Good work/life balance if you are on the right team with the right manager
-Lots of employee engagement, happy hours, employee development events
-Strong and experience leadership at the senior level

    Cons

-Tends to promote very young managers who have absolutely no experience in managing people
-Will guilt trip you into staying late even though you are on a contract with a set schedule of hours and will not be willing to pay you overtime for the extra hours you put in
-Very Clique-y and some managers will put you under the bus for their mistakes so they won't look like a fool by their director

    Advice to Management

Promote people who know how to lead and treat your contractors with respect

I worked at American Express (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company culture and work-life balance. Co-workers are smart, generally competent, and skew to the young side. My business was very accommodating, with lots of vacation time and ability to work remotely. Excellent professional development (you're encouraged to change roles every ~18 months).

    Cons

Amex is very bureaucratic, which shouldn't be a surprise given its size. Salary is below-average.

    Advice to Management

More transparency, particularly with regards to company re-org. Decreased office politics would be nice, but know that's not very practical.

I have been working at American Express full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company culture is phenomenal. Everyone is collaborative and willing to help across projects, genuine interest in your learning and development, and managers assist you when you are ready to move to a different group and/or promoted. Good benefits and work-life balance

    Cons

Only con is analysts don't receive bonuses, but its mitigated by the fact you are only expected to stay in role for about a year and a half before being promoted to next level
