I have been working at American Family Insurance (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They offer a base pay for stater agents

    Cons

There is absolutely no protection for the agents! Your book of business does not belong to you for ten years. Contract states it can be terminated with or without cause. They will terminate you. Pay another agent service fees and profit the commission and your future earnings and bonus. Very controlling even telling you who you can hire and making you use their preferred payroll company. They recruit your agents away from you for other agents or the agency program. Job security is minimal. Ruthless how after building a million dollar book of business with over thousand customers they call you in terminate your contract with security present, transfer your calls and policies to other agents office and disable your username/password. Although they charge you monthly for equipment they provided years earlier, they want that back to. Bogus termination reason given such as a complaint by customer, staff or someone that works in another department. It is not your business, you have no control. They only tell you that do that you will work excessive hours building your agency from scratch while receiving no retirement benefits. They will terminate with no warning and leave you with a commercial lease in your name. No concern for your staff, livelihood, credit or emotional wellbeing once they traumatized you just so they can take what you worked hard to create.

    Advice to Management

Let business owners be business owners. Stop treating agents like employees. Stop the corporate theft to pay executive salaries. Listen to your agents when they have concerns on policyholders policies since they are the first ones customers deal with instead of blowing it off and leaving your agents out to dry with irate customers do to screw ups in other departments such as claims commercial or life. Offer benefits and pay overtime.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Customers were the greatest part of working for the agency

    Cons

The American Family Agent I worked for made me watch while he played You Tube videos of black people acting in a disorderly way.

    Advice to Management

The Company made me believe they don't take these types of issues seriously and they allow this type of activity to be acceptable.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent policy portfolio for property/casualty. Good company to get into for entry level out of college.

    Cons

Terrible management verticals. Poor communication across different departments (sales, billing, underwriting). No health insurance offered for employees in agencies, only health insurance is offered to corporate employees.Claims are not taken seriously.

    Advice to Management

If you want entry level producers and assistant agents to share the stress/goals of the agent, compensate them as such. Agents start at $45,000 plus commission with commission and book of business. Assistants come in at $12 an hour with virtually no commission and no book of business. No health insurance. No benefits.

I worked at American Family Insurance part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

the insurance itself is one of the best on the market and still recommend friends to another agent

    Cons

poor training and unrealistic expectations of the the office team. over zealous performance expectations from the district office for the agent of the agency and the agents resulting in writing business that doesn't stay on the books. Cross selling is difficult due to the choices of life and health being limited and expensive

    Advice to Management

if you want sales agents to do what they do best (sell) have your admin staff do the majority of the paperwork and inputting of information
