I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work-life balance, benefits, compensation, opportunity for growth. American family is driven to serve it's customers, and that is evident at every level of the organization.

    Cons

Processes can change regularly. While it's beneficial to always have an eye for improvement, it can be frustrating to learn something, only to have to re-learn it in a different way after a short time.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits, flex schedules, jeans. The workloads may be getting better but the only real pro are the benefits and if you schmooze.

    Cons

Upper management does not care about the employees, only about the numbers. Impossible to do a good enough job. If you apply for a job at another company and that company calls a manager they know, forget it. They aren't supposed to give comments but they do.

    Advice to Management

    Get new upper management

    Pros

Company is evolving and staying competitive. Most people you deal with are pleasant and responsive. Have seen people go from entry level up the ladder. Great company if you are at internal networking especially with the right last name. Ceo is a smart man and believe he rose from Field sales all the way up the ladder.

    Cons

They claim they are transparent but its a half truth. The Industry is enormously changing and every initiative from their reformatting, to their "storefronts", to advanced underwriting and purchase of tech companies is designed to make the company more lean and make your position obsolete. The only staff that have not been affected by this are executive management who could feasibly be setting themselves up to cash out if/when they decide to go public. You may also want to research a pending class action suit called Jamal vs American Family as it could be another indicator instability at the company depending on the result.

    Advice to Management

My cons section is really a compliment to overall strategy as you are certainly taking great steps to avoid risk while transitioning (in my belief) to a tech/startup venture capital company. With that being said try to remember that it took much hard work from many people to get you here and people rely on you committing to them the same way they have to you. You tell people from the home office to the field that you are investing in them fully... while simultaneously laying the ground work to compete with your field force via direct sales, affinity arrangements and storefronts, relegate your underwriters to correcting the programs you purchased to replace them, nationwide purge of your management team, and layoffs in the home office.
