Decent enough, but not if you're passionate about tech

Nov 22, 2022 - Software Engineer in Madison, WI
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good pay, and seems economically stable-ish. GREAT coworkers. Immediate managers are responsive and understanding, which is important for success within a team. Work-life balance is sustainable. EXCELLENT benefits.

    Cons

Long term plans are very scattered with no clear vision, delegation of responsibilities, or ownership from upper leaders. Almost all innovations and tech-debt cleanup are pushed from the bottom up as grassroots initiatives, despite talk from the top stating that these endeavors are supported.

Great company to work for with amazing benefits

    Nov 30, 2022 - Data Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company as a whole cultivates a positive culture and cares about employees. HR listens to concerns and takes them seriously. Great vacation and health benefits. Plus generous 401k match and affordable life insurance.

    Cons

Your experience will depend on your manager and team culture. But those things can always be improved if you’re willing to be the change you want to see.

    “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable”

Nov 12, 2022 - Licensed Insurance Agent in Springfield, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Remote, 5% bonus, higher pay than most insurance remote agents

    Cons

Schedules are ridiculous. You’ll work 6 days straight then off one, then work another 4 then 2 days off. RIDICULOUS! Task, duties, and expectations change frequently. Training can be up to 6 months with breaks on the phones to practice learned materials. Manager incentives and bonuses vary from team to team depending on how giving and generous the manager may be. I was hired under false pretenses. I was told my position would be basic policy and billing task and duties until we were forced to upsell and cross which were heavy measured on metrics scores. Absolutely no one is on one accord. One manager will say one thing and the other will say the complete opposite.

    Overall Great

    Oct 27, 2022 - Software Developer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Flexible, great benefits, usually feels like upper management cares, attempts transparency and communication.

    Cons

Lately it's been hard to trust upper management due to walking back promises made about working from home. Previously it was stated that the company was committed to allowing employees to choose what fit best for them (fully remote, hybrid, or fully office) and this message was maintained until almost 2 months ago when it was suddenly announced that anyone within 50 miles of an office must come in to the office 2.5 days per week. While somewhat understandable when considering what is best for the company as well as employees, the issue is with how short notice it was. There wasn't enough notice given to allow for preparation, such as child care, buying a second car, reassessing finances to allow for increased commute expenses, etc.

    Worst Actuarial Manager Ever

Oct 4, 2022 - Actuarial Analyst in Boston, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great company to work for and with.

    Cons

My manager had the maturity of an 8-year-old. He (or They) set impossible goals that were only made impossible by his arbitrary success/fail metric. He pulled some BS at mid-year review, and he had my 2 weeks notice within 48 hours. And the only reason it took that long is I had to liquidate some assets to pay my rent upfront while I looked for a new job. My team had a size of 7, and yet 8 people left ( and were replaced) in the 12 months I was there. Worst manager I ever had by FAR. I actually would get panic attacks when he would ping me on chat with yet another petty nit-picky change that had absolutely nothing to do with the actuarial analysis. And, then 3 months later I would get: 'Hey remember that state filing from 3 months ago? Well, I found two spelling errors and a misaligned margin on page 32 of 70. That means you are performing "below expectations."' And for the record, I am not a receptionist, note taker, transcriptionist, or anything similar.

    Right Strategy Wrong Execution

    Nov 13, 2022 - Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Healthy amount of PTO and Holidays offered Culture of giving back to communities Strong focus on DEI

    Cons

Leadership is not aligned. Promoted Leaders that were good individuals contributors but not leaders or managers. Leadership from behind not the front. CEO is no where to be seen with moments the that matter. Large scale multi year transformation programs that are pushed without thoughtfulness and come at the expense of having enough resources to support existing work that runs the business. Too much change too quickly, without considering all impacts and how to execute the change well versus how quickly it can be executed.

Look On My Culture, Ye Employees, and Despair

    Oct 17, 2022 - Underwriter
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

For many years, employees at American Family enjoyed a high standard of living, with good wages and a company focus on work-life balance and employee satisfaction.

    Cons

However, this has changed recently, notably as American Family began acquiring more subsidiaries and transitioning to a larger enterprise business model. Employee-leadership relations have weakened; the company's forcible transition from work-from-home back to an in-office environment has played a significant part in this, as well as employee perception that the company lied about the possibility of this transition happening. In addition, American Family has been cutting their workforce without a proportional change in work demands, so each individual contributor is being forced to their maximum output. Recommend extreme caution for at least the next couple years in applying here. New hires are likely to face a large workload in an environment where trust in leadership is at an all-time low.

    Good training and job security

    Nov 15, 2022 - Quoting Specialist
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good corporate office support- tech line, help line for agents, and customer service line. Lots of resources and tools Paid for property and casualty license

    Cons

Depends on the specific agents office you are hired into. Insurance agents who own their agency tend to be high strung, intense, and motivated to sell at your detriment. You need thick skin to make it in this industry. Still are multiple systems to quote within. Sometimes communication can break down between coworkers.
