I have been working at American Fidelity Assurance Company full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

In my experience with American Fidelity (and outside of American Fidelity) I would be hard-pressed to name a better place to work in Oklahoma City for a company of this size. Like any company AF is not perfect, but there is so much to like: * Challenging, meaningful work * Fair base compensation * Strong, substantial bonus opportunities * Collegial environment * Approachable management (for the most part) *... Very flexible work options * Strong degree of autonomy * Good benefits

    Cons

Food selection at the on-site cafeteria is not great. Think California health plate out the wazoo.

I have been working at American Fidelity Assurance Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Bonuses, benefits are good, ability to work from home, dress for your day, nice work environment, PTO, their vision of a company culture is good

    Cons

Team Lead bullies good reliable workers out of their positions by firing them or making them pursue other job opportunities outside of the company. With this comes a lack of good training due to all the people who retained the knowledge being gone. The company does not look into the loss of good employees and continues to allow team lead to effect these things.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to look further into situations to prevent from losing knowledgeable and reliable workers due to poor leadership.

I worked at American Fidelity Assurance Company full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

AFA is a great company that takes care of their employees. The benefits are good, the 401k match and time off, and an amazing bonus. Having a clinic, bank, cafe, and state of the art gym are definitely perks, along with the walking / running trails that cover a beautiful campus.

    Cons

Unfortunately, there are a number of incompetent and just plain bad supervisors who sucked the life and the ability to do a competent job right out of their employees, and HR always sides with the supervisor over the employee. It's very sad that employees with years of service and excellent reviews can be let go because a supervisor takes a personal dislike to them.

    Advice to Management

A good manager doesn't micromanage. Let your people do what they are trained for. Encourage ALL of them, not just your favorites. If an employee is struggling with health or family issues, help them. Above all else, encourage questions and real teamwork.

I worked at American Fidelity Assurance Company

    Pros

    Company Car and Good benefits

    Cons

I had high hopes when I started as an Account Manager for AFA. Everything at first appeared to be wonderful with great co workers etc. However, the honeymoon quickly wore off and the ugly bride underneath came to light very quickly. The state manager micromanaged every aspect of your day. You never knew from one day to the next where you were going to be as she was so inept at management that she could not keep... the calendar straight. Favoritism towards a few senior reps was very apparent including colluding against some of the newer reps who were outselling the more senior reps. The greatest issue I had with this company was the lack of ethics. I personally witnessed my State Manager forge teacher signatures and recommend products that were not appropriate. I believe a majority of their Account Managers failed their securities license at least once if not multiple times yet these are the same reps meeting with the teachers and helping them with their retirements. If you can't pass the Series 6 and 63 the first time then you have no business handling anyone's investments. It's not a difficult test. So, if you're considering employment at AFA, especially as an Account Manager, my advice is to turn around. It's not worth it. You will suffer. Your family will suffer. It's simply not worth it.

I worked at American Fidelity Assurance Company for more than 10 years

    Pros

Financially sound company, good business model, knowledgeable people, good benefits and perks (pension, gym, café, flex hours etc) and most of the people are great. Training and education support are wonderful.

    Cons

A few people make life miserable at what could be a Great Place to Work, but really isn't despite being on the "list" which they buy their way on to with perks and free day of PTO. A keep your head down and do what you are told yes-man culture. And people do it because the pay and benefits are good or because they just want to promote at all cost or there aren't other ins companies in town as an alternative. They... say open, honest, engagement, team etc...but allow inconsistent behavior by execs. Routinely saw people yelled at and bullied in front of others. No one will do anything even though top management knows the offenders. People are afraid to speak up. If you do, there is retribution. People lie about others to get ahead, and it works! Management plays favorites. Doesn't even ask for the other side, nor listen if it is given.
