I worked at American Greetings full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Full on legit Starbucks onsite, located in Cleveland.

    Cons

Working for a second tier company in a declining industry. Controlling family treats company like their own personal ATM...Disinvestment and pennywise/pound foolish shortcuts abound...Nepotism rampant, beware the incompetent in a leadership position who's a fourth cousin by marriage to Irv Stone's grandniece. Don't flaunt your education, because it's not valued.

    Advice to Management

You have a CIO with a high school diploma and a Napoleon complex who values loyalty above all else. He has built a team of sycophants, driving morale into the toilet. CLEAN HOUSE!

I have been working at American Greetings full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Free soda and indoor walking track

    Cons

The management is old and tired which is why the company is old and tired as well. The management is egotistical and does not listen to anything involving change and efficiency. If you make waves you will find yourself on the next lay-off list which happens at least once a year under the guise of reorganization and system retirements. If you want to work for a company where you will never feel job secure, this is your dream place!! The projects are always handled fast, never tested properly and delivered with tons of errors which cost the company money to fix. Logically, when a company is trying to save money they should be stopping behaviors that cost them money. Service affecting, post production defects always cost money yet AG seems to not care about that and continues the vicious cycle with EVERY project.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and release all middle management staff. Promote from within or bring in fresh talent to add modernization to your ideas and business opportunities. Employ and stand by a project methodology that will reduce the number of defects found post production when projects go live. Upgrade your technology and focus your energy on competing with the sleepers like JibJab, Hallmark, Tinyprints. Do something DIFFERENT for a change!!

I worked at American Greetings (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There were no pros to working at AG ITS.

    Cons

The IT organization is completely dysfunctional due to the fact that the entire management structure is in the belief they are experts in every aspect of running an IT business, all of it despite the fact that most have never done anything else except work at AG. Mean spirited, closed-minded, tyrannical individuals who are mostly concerned with their own fiefdoms. Surprised the Weiss family has allowed the division to grow so malign. Would not recommend, unless you are desperate for a paycheck.

    Advice to Management

Clean house in IT management chain.

I worked at American Greetings (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is good for area, learned a lot different position, benefits

    Cons

Management was terrible, you can move up thru the plant, but far as getting management position or office that when good ole boy system kicks in, they don't appreciate there workers, will fired you on dime, there production is too high to met, never do anything special for the employees, don't get comfortable at your spot cause if someone gets bump off there job or there position no longer available they can and will take there position back from you, you also have no family time or life for yourself, the only thing they care about is there cards, no need to have vacation days they freeze them and get mad when you got too many at the end of the year, the money was good but something not worth money.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your employees with a little more respect, stop being so unorganized

    Cons

Making fun of your accent if you have one. Give you less salary if they could. So much work to save company money. Overtime 5 days a week plus pushing work from home. Terrible unprofessional employees and managers.

    Advice to Management

Get people with education as directors and managers. Improve horrible culture.

    Pros

Work on your own, on your own hours.

    Cons

If you are so "blessed" to have a supervisor like mine, who stuffed work in a drawer out of sight, instead of processing a credit to the store, not putting cards back in stock and not having the reorder tickets up with the cards, instead of in a plastic bag. So much work needs to be done to get the card dept in order, a rep is doomed from the beginning.

    Advice to Management

Check up on if the supervisors are earning their paychecks. The account that I was assigned to is so far behind in work that has not been done. There has not been a rep servicing this location for a very long time. The supervisor has put out the seasonal cards, but damaged cards, which should be credited to the store and cards that need to be put back into stock were just shoved into a drawer, for some other time, which never will come. If the store only knew how bad a service American Greetings is giving them! Why the supervisor thought this was fair to the next merchandiser and the store is beyond me!!
