I worked at American Heritage Federal Credit Union

    Pros

This credit union is very involved in the community and really cares about their employees and work/life balance

    Cons

The pay is not high enough in almost every position and the company is growing, causing less pay increases so they can hire more employees.

    Advice to Management

Rather than focusing on how many billion the credit union can grow to, you should focus on improving wages for your employees.

    Pros

You really have to mess up badly to get fired here. Not sure if that's a pro or con. It depends on which side of the coin you're on. Their philosophy seems to be that a body is better than a vacant position. (See reason below.) They hire family members. They do all kinds of fun things and have fun events and you can wear jeans, shorts, and flip flops to work occasionally. We got pizza parties as a thanks for voting... our company "Best Place to Work" (though we were "reminded" to vote way too many times by HR). They treat anyone who works at the main office or adjoining branch like gold. Work/life balance actually does exist here. A few people in senior management are down to earth and approachable. They bend over backwards for members.

    Cons

CEO is a bit conceited and stubborn (but very nice). He likes to acquire smaller credit unions faster than his poor HR department can staff them. He basically cares more about his legacy of charity than anything else, which is admirable, but his employees are the ones doing the charity events and raising money for his big charity by selling raffle tickets, candy bars, books, etc. The only real way to get ahead is to... be a brown noser or be related to someone semi-important. Don't expect to make a lot of money here unless you meet the previous criteria. Lots of money wasted on decorations for various internal events, unnecessary supplies, landscaping, a fleet of "wrapped" vehicles, "charging stations" for cell phones in branches (that don't work and have resulted in members' phones being stolen). Oh, and then there was that "Heritage Wall" around Christmas 2014. It was tacky and a huge waste of money that could have been invested in employees. They bend over backwards for members who are downright cruel and/or crazy. Just about anyone can open a savings account, regardless of credit history and if they jumped ship from another bank when they owed them money. Quantity does not always equal quality.

    Advice to Management

Take employee feedback seriously. Sometimes underlings know what they're talking about.
