    Pros

AIAA employees share a good professional working relationship with colleagues and with membership.

    Cons

Some disconnect between job titles and job responsibilities which can suppress career advancement and salaries.

I have been working at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (More than 3 years)

    Pros

About 3 years ago AIAA got a new Executive Director who is pumping new life into the Institute. She did a reorganization in the fall of 2013, and brought in some new people who had prior success in the association/non-profit industry. She kept the employees that truly love AIAA's members and work hard for them, or at least the ones that work hard. There are always a few people that haven't caught on to the movement, and would prefer brighter pastures or the way it used to be, but as they say the grass is not greener. This is a place where if you work hard and care about the organization and what it does (not too hard, it's mainly space and aviation which are pretty dang cool), you will prosper. Whether it's with more money each year through the annual bonus and raise, or through a title promotion or finding a higher position in another department. They also give employees bagels on Mondays, and have happy hours once a quarter. So it's a pretty cool place.

    Cons

You are not going to go from an administrative assistant to a director here quickly. If that's your goal the non-profit space is probably not right for you. You sometimes have to deal with programs that are missile and defense focused (which some people might not enjoy). There is no shortage of work, so this is not a place you can sit around and play games on your phone, you have to work hard in order to fit in and do well.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your managers about workload. Get a employee review system in place.

I worked at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work-life balance; lots of "snow days". I heard the benefits were great but had them though my spouse's employer. 401k wasn't too bad.

    Cons

Everything else; no one leaves because they are comfortable getting a check and being able to leave early. The salaries are typically lower than you would find at a for-profit company. I was there when the previous director was around and his way of rewarding excellence was horrible. His predecessor would hand out bonuses only to people he liked (so I heard) so the grand plan was to give everyone very little extra money unless you somehow drastically changed AIAA way of doing business; which really meant you were not getting a bonus and / or the smallest of raises regardless of your work ethic.

Very clique-ish and a little racist from some. Some of the white people who thought I was another race use to talk trash about my actual race in front of me. There was a one manager there who would trash about other races in front of people.

    Advice to Management

Hope your funding eventually dries up. Just because you are not worried about profits, doesn't mean you forget the over all mission; the members stupid.

I worked at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with, good benefits, travel opportunities, good work/life balance, relaxed atmosphere, overall a good place to work.

    Cons

I don't really have anything bad to say about the company. It is a good place to work, we could all use a little more money, so if I had to say anything - higher salary.

I worked at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits excellent, staff friendly, good support from some staff

    Cons

Expect some staff to carry huge loads of work, while others are Facebook or playing games all the time. Managers know this, but do nothing.

    Advice to Management

To many managers and directors. Time to clean the slate of a few managers and directors who do nothing.

I have been working at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics full-time

    Pros

90% super-friendly staff with a warm, family-like vibe. Work/Life Balance for those who need more flexibility in their schedule. Good benefits.

    Cons

Like most non-profits, it has some blind spots when it comes to being nimble to a changing business environment. It is having difficulty defining what it wants to be and who to serve in the future. Has difficulty retaining young, ambitious staffers who get frustrated with the lack of distinct career paths.

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Good health coverage with relatively low premiums. Paid time off between Christmas and New Years.

    Cons

Though the company is small, varied mission (member services, publications, events, etc.) means teams rarely interact with other teams.

    Pros

Great benefits. Great work/life balance. Great relationships among co-workers.

    Cons

Most of the employees have been with the company long-term. They are close minded to new approaches or strategies.

    Advice to Management

Value curiosity and implement new ideas.
