I worked at American Media full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with, very well versed in all aspects and can cross cover whenever needed. Enjoyed the job and the challenge.

    Cons

Keep cutting into the production staff and spreading work out to whoever is left. Too much for too little staff left

    Advice to Management

Complete overhaul, stop cutting the people that get the mags out, only hurting yourself

I worked at American Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I honestly can't think of any

    Cons

The people who run this company are some of the least scrupulous, most compromised individuals I have ever encountered. Completely obsessed with appearances only, and they give special treatment to their friends and associates while overworking and under-compensating their employees. They only care about making money, not about the quality of the content in their magazines.

    Advice to Management

Try the golden rule sometime: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

    Pros

There is nothing really to recommend this place.

    Cons

Everybody is overworked and under paid which lead to a pretty soul-less experience.

    Advice to Management

Treat people like they have lives.

    Pros

Easy! Remote office. Did I mention easy! You just come in, get your work done, and go home. Definitely work life balance.

    Cons

Unstable. Volatile. Job was always at risk. The company is run by a dictator. You are constantly walking on eggshells waiting to be fired. Better to be away from it in a remote office, but the threat is still there and very real!

    Advice to Management

Treat employees well and they'll actually care about doing a better job. There is potential to bring in so much more money, but you don't reward employees with strong pay or commission. Or you promise and then when goals are achieved, you take it all away.

    Pros

Great Pay and Benefits, Major Annual Layoffs

    Cons

I should have paid more attention to the reviews before accepting this job, or staying as long as I did. The pay and benefits were amazing, but the layoffs that took place were unreal. And after 18 months, I was the staid quo of being laid off myself. Would not recommend to Anyone looking for growth within a company.

    Advice to Management

    Maintain transparency to your employees

    People were great.

    Advice to Management

    Do more with Digital

I worked at American Media full-time

    Pros

The non-managerial people you work with are super kind and pleasant. The building is in a good location.

    Cons

Highly advise STAYING AWAY!!! Zero work/life balance. Expected to work so much so that going to the restroom is a privilege, god forbid you take a break for lunch. Compensation is abysmal. Backwards and anti-progressive. A real shock and eye opener for me as someone who came from the complete opposite kind of company.

    Advice to Management

PROGRESS!- if you want to retain talent get with the times. People have lives! Don't expect/assume employees will take work home from the office to complete on weekends. Show some respect.

I worked at American Media part-time

    Pros

Nice people, manageable hours (compared to some other tabloids). Decent pay.

    Cons

Top brass weighs in on major editorial decisions and covers, with no regard for accuracy in reporting. All men running a women's magazine makes for a misogynistic bent in the stories printed. Corporate treats employees with little regard or respect. They go on a big firing tear every year, leaving the few leftover employees with more and more work.

I worked at American Media full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Easygoing mid-level staff
Typical 9am-5pm hours, for the most part
Two weeks paid vacation, not including personal/sick days

    Cons

Layoffs are constant, especially for entry-level positions (they cycle people out before they get the chance to move up so that they can keep paying college grads virtually nothing)
Employees are apathetic about their jobs
    Promotes gossipy/cliquey culture

    Advice to Management

Hold onto the young people who are committed to your company because they are the ones capable of moving it into the 21st century
