I worked at American National Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You're not stuck in an office and you have freedom to go visit clients. If you meet the quota for the year, you have a nice vacation paid for.

    Cons

Company does not provide fuel allowance. Chasing clients for their premiums. Sales managers and district managers are also on commission so they are constantly on you about sales.

    Advice to Management

Learn to work with your agents, remember we are a big part of the company and your salary.

    Pros

If you're unemployed and American National offers you a job, take it in the interum until you can get something better.

    Cons

Management is disrespectful and blames lower level employees for their incompetence. They don't know what they're doing and will not give you the tools or information needed to do the job. Management berates other employees in front of you and will do the same to you within earshot. No one really knows what they're doing. They are all just winging it because there is no formal training of any kind, ever. The software they use is antiquated. There is no structure. Everyone constantly scrambles to fix mistakes at the last minute which causes unnecessary stress. They have taken away the pension plan and sick days. Evaluations are now graded on a bell curve and they find any reason to give employees a 2% raise instead of the standard 5% cost of living increase. Morale is low among employees and management displays lack of integrity.

    Advice to Management

No advice to management as they will not read this review. If they do, they will not accept responsibility for their actions or lack thereof. They will pass the buck and blame anyone they can for their incompetence. Stop walking around with a scumbag sense of entitlement and actually do something to EARN your title & pay. There are so many more qualified people who can do a much better job than you. Step up and improve your management, organization, communication and people skills. When you change for the better, your employees will change for the better. If management can understand this, then maybe they will see an improvement in performance and work environment. However, this is too complicated for managers and executives to understand and implement and too much for employees to hope for. Treat your employees with respect and train them formally and properly. Use common sense and drop the ego.

You are your own boss and can set your own schedule.

    Cons

Some Agency Managers will do anything to get you onboard and then leave you in the dust once hired. There is no formal training program besides watching videos.

I have been working at American National Insurance (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers (excluding management), 401K with matching contribution, holidays off (mostly) and several "hidden" benefits such as local discounts. They have a deli on-site that is run by a GREAT family.

    Cons

Outdated and unsafe facilities and equipment, high stress, consistent micromanagement, extreme politics and backstabbing from top to bottom, hypocritical policies and strategies, apathetic view of employees-everyone is a number and nothing more outside of a few middle managers. This company constantly begs you to donate to the United Way, and at times will make you pay for incentives such as wearing jeans. There are more meetings going on than there is working. There is a lot of red tape with most positions, and in an effort to "simplify" work flow, things become unnecessarily complicated and counter-productive.

    Advice to Management

Unfortunately there is no amount of advice that can help any of their management. Employees consistently attempt to provide feedback, but it's usually met with extreme criticism, or falls on deaf ears. It's truly a shame, many dedicated and hard-working employees have left this company due to management, or Mismanagement more accurately. This company used to treat people like family, but now it's about the bottom line and keeping quiet.
