Impressive work environment with caring and knowledgeable management. Respectful of work/life balance, and able to impact the lives of others.
Cons
Cons can exist on a case by case basis. Tele-working opportunities, if applicable, should be considered after some research and consideration.
I'm glad you are enjoying your time with us. As you know, at American Public University System all of our employees contribute to the success of our student first mission and we are glad you are apart of supporting that mission! As you may not know, the University does offer teleworking opportunities for many of our employees. If you have questions about those opportunities please speak with your manager or human resources. Thanks again for doing all that you do!

It's skewed towards the employer in terms of treatment...
Jul 30, 2014 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I loved the people I worked with. Everyone seemed so down to earth. Some of the higher ups were snobs but you get that everywhere. The working environment was neat and clean. Most of the buildings are brand new and since APUS owns most of the town, it is very enjoyable to leave the car behind and walk the pleasant main streets of Charles Town to get from building to building.
Cons
Ultimately with all of the cut backs and with the hiring freeze, the job became way to much for the pay. Like another review said, the work life balance became less of a balance and more of a demand. With a laptop, a hot spot and a blackberry, I was often being asked to work outside of my working hours. With all of the equipment coming home with you every night it's hard to make an excuse you missed an email or a phone call. With a family of 5 and doing 60 hours a week I had to give it up and move on.

One of the better for-profit schools to teach for.

Good program directors and faculty directors. Some of the best students--many are in the military and have good work ethics and are respectful. Flexible, work-at-home schedule. If you do your work well, you are not micromanaged and you are trusted. Decent benefits. Tuition is free or reduced for employees.
Cons
No room for advancement, lower than average pay, and no pay raises. Vacation is required to be taken all in one month and scheduled a year in advance. Work/life balance can be hard because there are basically no weekends off.

Family environment Remote work available Free education for employees and tuition discount for spouses and dependents Work life balance Birthday/Anniversary appreciation
Cons
Pay does not match experience or education level Minimal pay increase/lack of bonuses for performance each year Minimal advancement opportunities Lack of transparency and openness with employees
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
APUS has an incredible work life balance. Most employees work a primarily telework schedule. The company doesn't have a big budget for the extras, but they do try to make their employees feel appreciated in any way that they are able. The HR department is on point! They are always looking for ways to strengthen their workforce.
Cons
The company is in a downward spiral. Each year more and more layoffs are made. While the employees love working at APUS, that doesn't pay the bills and more resignations are occurring due to compensation just not being competitive.

Pros
Thoughtful new leadership with exciting vision and genuine care for employees. Teams work together to achieve goals and always consider students first. Total rewards focus and continuous improvement have been top of mind.
Cons
Work life balance though many times self-imposed.
