    Great place to work!

    Pros

I loved working at APWA because it is a fast-paced non-profit organization that functions almost solely off of its publications and its outreach programs. They are patient, kind, and most of all hard-working people that put their nose to the grindstone every morning when they walk in to make sure that the American Public comes first.

    Cons

The only downside I have to mention is that they didn't have any full-time positions available within the company and mentioned to me that positions do not often open up either.

    Welcome back to high school.

    Pros

Benefits, work from home options, great work/home life balance.

    Cons

Unprofessional behavior at all levels. HR cannot maintain confidentiality. No room for advancement. Special positions are made and given to people without allowing others to apply. Passive aggressive staff. Lots of smiles to your face, and negativity behind your back. No action on employees who refuse to do their job. Lack of communication between departments. If they dont like you you are stuck in your position till they find a way to fire you. Some employees have been there 20 years in the same position. Very dramatic over the top complaints. Lots of cliques. The atmosphere is very high school-ish.

    Pros

Great benefits, easy work. Simple and cyclical work load, not a lot of surprises. Fellow employees were great. Location was great.

    Cons

Simple and cyclical work load, not a lot of surprises. HR is very unprofessional, no confidentiality. Poor employees and executives are not addressed. Weak leadership, old thinking keeps them in a rut. No room for advancement. After a long stint on staff, I was not promoted. Directors on staff were held to a different level of leadership, staff often felt misused and abused.

Great benefits, but no advancement opportunities

    Pros

Fantastic benefits. Central location in downtown KC. Regular work --you always know what kind of work is coming and when its coming.

    Cons

No room for advancement. Sickly company culture- nobody sticks around at lunchtime and holiday lunches are uncomfortable at best. Upper management won't fire bad employees (like someone who has made at least five people quit and cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars).

    Pros

Working with Public Works professionals from all over the US and Canada, and getting to see an "insider" perspective of what goes into maintaining the infrastructure of a community, was very interesting and eye-opening.

    Cons

Working inside a hyper-patriarchal management structure with no HR confidentiality, no advancement, no empowerment, and a culture of protecting incompetent managers, was also eye-opening, in an entirely different way. Employee morale ran the gamut from 'bad" to "terrible", and upper management's "band-aid" fixes only worsened the problem.
