I worked at American Railcar Industries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great start off pay. Plenty of hours to be worked. Paid vacation after one year. Full benefits eye care, dental, and health insurance.

    Cons

It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Long days longer nights. Hard work few breaks and constantly management is telling you to speed up.

    Advice to Management

When it's hot out don't push employees to the edge of heat stroke if your there an extra hour at least your crew will show up the next day and not be in hospital from heat stroke.

    Pros

Cross training is available. There are some good people to work with. It's easy to get into management but it tends to stagnate after that.

    Cons

Short sighted managment and business practices are still stuck in the 1970's. Deferred maintenance runs rampant through out the facility.

    Advice to Management

Focus on production effeciencies and let people have their weekends. 76% of the year is mandatory overtime.

I worked at American Railcar Industries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I have been working at American Railcar Industries full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great bosses, and they help you with issues that may come up a moments notice. Production bosses can be hard to get along with, but it's the nature of the beast. Quality is definitely where you want to be.

    Cons

Not much of a social life if you want to be good at your job. ARI provides all the training you'll need, and plenty of money in your pockets from all the hours worked, but that can be hard on families. I worked an average of 75 hours a week and paid hourly.

    Advice to Management

Try to find the "favorites" and show them how to work with everyone in their group. I saw countless times, people getting away with not doing their job because the other guy would just take up the slack.

I have been working at American Railcar Industries full-time

    Pros

Great location in the heart of St. Charles. Most people are very friendly and senior staff are mostly helpful. Managers allow time off for personal needs

    Cons

In the past few years the company has changed drastically. The company is basically being run by short-sided financiers and by the board of directors. No thoughts as to the future of the company-- constantly neglecting good customers and ruining long-standing relationships. They are losing all talented workers to competitors because they are too slow to act, and too cheap to provide standard salaries & benefits packages. The highest level managers are disinterested in company objectives and unwilling to make any changes.

    Advice to Management

Define company objectives and put a plan of action into place. Big changes are needed soon.

I worked at American Railcar Industries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    They do pay on time.

    Cons

Exceeding number of employees with 20+ years there.
Abhorrence of anything new or creative.
Company populated by empire builders doing everything they can to perpetuate the status quo.

    Advice to Management

Bring in a new management team to clean house.
