I worked at American Red Cross full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Diverse, good group of coworkers. Meaningful work.

    Cons

Very low pay. Nearly no room for advancement. Demanding, high-volume, monotonous workload. High turnover.

    Advice to Management

Raise base pay or give merit raises. Throw out the raise after x years policy. This will lower turnover, allow you to keep good techs, and change the culture of the lab. Right now it's viewed as a place to start your career not a place to work long term. You're like the McDonalds for recent science grads.

I worked at American Red Cross full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Donors and voluteers
    Working with healthy people

    Cons

    Disconnected, incompetent management
    HR
You're just another body, no matter what
They claim to be a "humanitarian organization," but that is so far from the truth. The only thing that motivates them is $$$$$$$$
Unfair wages set by outdated union contracts
    Daily fluctuation in schedule
Some weeks you might get 50+ hours, and the next week you get 30.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your employees like slaves working for slave wages.
Stop claiming to be a "humanitarian organization" when everybody who works for you knows that's a lie.
Pay your employees FAIRLY. Would you work as hard as your mobile staff for the wages you pay them in the outdated union contracts? No, you wouldn't. This is 2017. Get real. All you do is take everything away and give nothing back in return.

I worked at American Red Cross as an intern

    Pros

    -It's a prestigious non-profit to work for
-I got some pretty great bonuses as an unpaid Intern
-I worked with a great team, and had opportunities to expand my network

    Cons

-Poor management led to poor results for the program I was working on
-Lack of accountability due to large, bureaucratic feel of the organization

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to how you spend your money, and stop advocating people spend money on grad school in order to get paid positions.

I worked at American Red Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mission of the organization is exceptional and the history of the brand is next-to-none

    Cons

Executive Leaders are too detached from the staff. The CEO continues to promote her former colleagues from AT&T into larger leadership roles when they actually may be part of the problem

    Advice to Management

Look outside for better leadership for the blood business; the HR department could use a new leader as well for some new and innovative HR ideas and practices

    Pros

Great volunteers and co-workers. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Local chapters are definitely mistreated unless you are at a national, divisional, or regional chapter. Local chapters are definitely mistreated.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the boots on the ground and look at local and regional data to ensure human capital is in the right places. Our local chapter responded to 3x the disasters of our regional chapter and raised almost as much money; however, we were understaffed and were the ones that continued to be hit by layoffs even though the regional office only lost 2 ppl and we lost over 1/3 of our staff. Very unfair, but decisions are made at a regional level, so what do you expect?!?

Start caring about your employees instead of your bonus checks
