I worked at American Red Cross as an intern

    Pros

Supportive boss and co-workers, learned a lot from interacting with people and the outside sectors, great benefits. Everyone was super nice and willing to share their knowledge and experiences with you.

    Cons

A bit too limited within my own unit. Lack of inter-departmental interactions so that staff only know people within their own department. Also the opportunity for learning is limited somehow.

    Advice to Management

Maybe more activities can be organized for employees and interns outside of the office setting so that there'll be more interactions among the office staff to increase productivity.

I worked at American Red Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved my time with the Red Cross! I was lucky enough to have both an amazing boss and incredible co-workers. The mission was the reason I joined, the people are the reason I stayed.

    Cons

It can be very exhausting and emotionally hard assisting people on the worst day of their life, but is also very rewarding.

    Advice to Management

Continue to allow individuals from the field to make significant input in the direction of the organization.

I have been working at American Red Cross (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I absolutely LOVE volunteering at the Red Cross. It's one of the BEST things that have ever happened to me. And I'll volunteer at the Red Cross for the rest of my life. I LOVE it

    Cons

The only thing that it's NOT MY CUP OF TEA is that they have to DISCARD the blood from therapeutic donors. I truly believe that If the blood is safe, then it should be given to patients but ONLY if it's SAFE. I recommend to consider changing that

    Advice to Management

I promise to volunteer at this sacred organization for the rest of my life. You can count on me ALWAYS!!
The only thing I don't like is that they DISCARD the blood from therapeutic donors. Again if the blood is safe, and its beneficial to the patient, then I strongly believe changing that rule because not only does it upset therapeutic donors but I think that that blood should be used at least for medical research. Another thing, I've read over the internet that it's perfectly safe to give therapeutic blood to recipients, even if the therapeutic donors has hemochromatosis. Please reconsider my feedback

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you are willing to show interest in what the company does and are motivated to learn there are a lot of opportunities. I have been with ARC for almost 20 years. I started as a tech and worked my way up to a senior management position. I have learned so much! Seriously, opportunities abound but you have to show you are motivated. BTW-I'm not a white, privileged male since you might be assuming that.
Women have an amazing number of opportunities. It's one of the things I like most about us.

    Cons

It is a very conservative company. This is not the place to be if you want to be on the cutting edge of IT, creative management structures, etc. There's not going to be a break room with a Ping-Pong table.
It is a non-profit so salaries are not super competitive although they are improving.

    Advice to Management

Admit when we don't know the next best thing to do and ask for ideas from others. Just because you are in a management position doesn't mean you always have the answer. I learn things all the time from my staff.
