    Pros

the ablility to make a positive difference in the world and to save lives. You can also affect change in the organization.

    Cons

the whole not-for-profit thing and lack/cutback mentality gets old. It's used too often as an excuse for why we can't change. We often put the cart before the horse by making pronouncements of projects and timelines that are unrealistic. I've often heard the term "things happen in Red Cross Time".

    Advice to Management

stick around long enough to change the culture. Allow the benefit of cashing in PTO time. We've earned it and shouldn't have to lose it because we put off taking leave due to project slippage.

    Pros

the mission:knowing you are helping people and saving lives everyday; the people: the staff are engaged, committed and dedicated to the mission. The opportunity to meet and serve the american public.
The Red Cross has excellent benefits and a very generous time off policy.

    Cons

It is a non-profit that relies solely on the public's generosity for time, money and blood. No government funding for critical work that Red Cross must perform. Sometimes the long hours at a disaster or just your normal job can be overwhelming.

    Advice to Management

Keep the new open flow of communication going. Hold senior leaders accountable to be proactive, innovative leaders, capable of change. This new era of openness is very welcome; makes sure it reaches the trenches.

At times slow because of fda & other regulations

    Advice to Management

To be more open to welcome ideas from the grass root employees

    Pros

Very Fulfilling. You know that you are making a difference in peoples lives and in your communities ability to respond to disaster. Everyone seems to truly believe in the mission and pulls together to achieve those goals.

    Cons

Low pay is the norm. In most cases only those with other incomes or retirements can afford to work at the salaries offered. Creates increased turnover in some areas causing inexperience to be an issue.

To much change over too short a period of time. Leaves too many questions as to the future.

    Advice to Management

Be careful not to lose what works while trying to improve what doesn't.

Laid back atmosphere that gives you a sense of accomplishment from every little thing you do. Great communication. Great sense of freedom.

    Cons

Non profit means not much advancement

    Advice to Management

Continue leading as part of the team despite the fact that there is a home office that doesn't always give you what you need to optimize results.

    Pros

The American Red Cross gave me a lot of responsibility, and gave me many opportunities to rise to the occasion and claim ownership for my work. Workers are pleasant and give credit where credit is due. Interning here is a great opportunity. Also, great career training.

    Cons

Things were expected me that were outside my area of expertise. While this gave me opportunities, it was also stressful.

    Advice to Management

Incentives should be put in place to increase the productivity of its workers. Also, better information sharing systems would reduce cost and increase efficiency.

    Pros

The Red Cross is a great company that is an overall happy place to work. We work hard, and we know it's for a good cause!

    Cons

Whenever there is a disaster, the hours are very long. But I am fully aware that is necessary in this line of work!

    Advice to Management

There are some people who have been at the company for years who have a lot to give, but they haven't been given the chance to promote. It would be great if some people who are the "do-ers" would get a chance to be more vocal about changes.

Great organization with an amazing mission. Also work with really great people every day. Washington DC is also a great city.

    Cons

Some times things can be a little bureaucratic. There is red tape involved with a lot of what we do.

    Advice to Management

Gail McGovern, the new CEO, has the organization on a great path. We're coming together and are living up to our reputation as a world class organization.
