    Pros

Working for the Red Cross allows me to meet great volunteers and know that the work we do touches lives.

    Cons

So many administrative tasks, changes to systems and no understanding of what the positions look like from upper management anymore.

    Advice to Management

Go in the field with your employees and learn what their day-to-day is like.

I worked at American Red Cross full-time

    Pros

Not many pros can be listed

    Cons

Horrible line of communication with upper management. Inconsistent decision making and inability to take responsibility. Often blame line staff for problems occurring when in reality the whole system is broken at the top. Unsupportive management.

    Advice to Management

Release RNs who are unable to fulfill their full job duties. Supervisors need to work too.

I have been working at American Red Cross full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Honestly, there are no real pros. It is a paycheck and experience. They will hire almost anyone with a BS in biology or chemistry. There is always opportunity for overtime because people are always quitting. The turnover rate is extremely high. People usually stay between 6 month to a year. They match the 401K up to 4%.

    Cons

Bad pay. They use the excuse that the pay is low because they are Not-for-Profit, but upper management really makes all the money. Horrible health benefits and the employees pay for most of it. We have currently have Cigna but used to have Blue Cross. Horrible supervisors because they promote unqualified people. They hire and retain anyone. Even if they are not right for the job because they need people. Sometimes you work six days in a row because they don't know how to make a five day schedule. You don't get sick days, you get PTO and if you get sick more than three time in six months, they start to look for excuses to fire you because you call out too much. Some of the supervisors are very disrespectful staff, while their friends do anything they want. Too much nepotism and favoritism. Employees yelling matches in the lab is ignored.(this applies to the supervisors also because they don't know how to supervise) The training is a joke...Seriously. And they expect you to perform your job without any mistakes. When you make too many they use it as a reason to not give you a raise. The lab is dirty and they expect you to clean it because the cleaning staff is horrible.

    Advice to Management

I had to give a star because this site doesn't allow for no stars. Get new supervisors who actually want to supervise. There are only three that are any good. Stop the favoritism and treat all employees the same. Invest in employees and they will invest their time in the company. Get better healthcare or give some kind of incentive to make people want to stay with this company. There currently is no reason to stay here. When are you going to open your eyes?

    Pros

    Cons

I worked at American Red Cross full-time

    Pros

none. none at all. the entire organization is managed by some really not very good people.

    Cons

don't be fooled. just because this company has been around forever, it doesn't mean it's an ethical organization. they treat volunteers and low-level employees like crap. if you complain, they get rid of you. if you notice that things are not right, you're rewarded for turning a blind-eye to it....I wouldn't trust this organization. if you give blood, they sell it to hospitals to pay salaries. if you donate money, it pays MOSTLY salaries. the money they give to people when their houses burn down is marginal. there aren't that many home fires where they give people money. AND, when there is a major disaster, the money goes towards mostly volunteers traveling to give away food and other things that it got for free, and again for SALARIES. the only thing i'd give to them is advice. get rid of the CEO, upper management, and all those people who DON"T REALLY CARE about people. Ok....well, that means they'll need to start all over again. the only people remaining may just be the volunteers. if the red cross fired ALL upper management and hired volunteers to replace them, i will retract this review. also, if you look at the reviews in here -- they're done by red cross people who were successful--it's management reviewing management.....

I have been working at American Red Cross for more than 10 years

    Pros

Co-workers and volunteers, most of them are the best.

    Cons

Upper Management. If you know your job, have experience and are the best fit for an open position. You will NOT get the job, it will go to someone without experience, that knows someone. Buddy-Buddy system.

    Advice to Management

No advice. No one will listen
