    Pros

The opportunity to effect change and make a difference in the organization. ASTA really has a great mission but needs to toot it's own horn more often to let travel agents, suppliers and the public know exactly what they do every day to promote the use of a travel agent and why the publice should use one.

    Cons

Salaries are lower than most other companies in the travel industry. There are great employees who should be tapped for ideas on how to improve each of their respective departments so the association will experience more rapid growth.

    Advice to Management

Allow more opportunity for employees to give feedback on how to manage budget and increase sales.

I worked at American Society of Travel Agents full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not too many pros to this company at all, which is a shame.

    Cons

The company culture was fairly punitive and punishing. Upper management was always looking to blame someone for something. Very little cooperation or teamwork within the company's employees. Fairly cut-throat and extremely competitive and aggressive atmosphere. Such an atmosphere really destroyed any commaderie which might have existed along with effective, efficient teamwork and support.

    Advice to Management

Managers should be properly trained to supervise and mentor their employees. It is a fairly small company and leadership ability should be present. Instead there is a lot of infighting and non-cooperation towards what should be common goals and interests. No fair play at all.

    Pros

great group of people. family type atmosphere with colleagues who genuinely seem to care about one another. great benefits.

    Cons

no money to do anything! most positions lead nowhere - stagnant.

    Advice to Management

if you want to get different results, you have to do something different. you can do the same things and expect something new to happen. yours are not the only or the best ideas. consult with your staff.

    Pros

Opportunities to travel - both domestic and international
    Flexible schedule
    Ability to develop new projects
Office location is close to shopping, restaurants

    Cons

Poor budget management by senior leadership
Management's inability to eliminate or restructure projects that are not revenue-generating
    Lack of morale among staff
Poor internal communication and sense of collaboration

    Advice to Management

Re-examine the organizational structure to improve workflow and streamline processes. Research alternatives to staff or pay reductions. In moving forward with these measures, it has greatly damaged morale and lead to an exodus of talent.

    Pros

Generally, there is flexibility for time off when needed
    Quiet workplace in good location
Safe work environment in walkable community

    Cons

    Absent leadership- lacks direction
Few opportunities for growth because there is no system of recognizing or rewarding achievement
    No formal employee review process
No opportunity to compete for raises
    Frequent Pay cuts and layoffs
    Very high turnover

    Advice to Management

The company has to be honest with its employees if morale is ever going to improve. Otherwise, employees will continue to have a big trust problem

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Friendly, knowledgeable and seasoned staff were eager to share their experience and teach the "next generation" of government affairs professionals. They have a wealth of industry and government know-how and they were always eager to share.

    Cons

Despite being a small organization, there is still a divide between the various departments (membership, meetings and events, government affairs, etc) that can make sharing information and keeping up to date difficult across the organization.

    Advice to Management

Please keep providing these invaluable experiences to other young professionals who are looking to make thier start in DC. Your internship program was very mutually beneficial and I hope to see it grow and expand in years to come!
