    Pros

Great culture and work-life balance. A company that really cares about its associates. Tries to do the right thing by its partners and members at all times.

    Cons

In transition and not a lot of opportunity at this time. Expect there to be layoffs in the near future.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent to quell the panic. Look for expertise in-house before shelling out lots of money to consultants. Listen to your associates.

    Pros

Friendly work culture, great downtown location, good benefits

    Cons

can get stuck in a role without opportunity for advancement

    Advice to Management

Hire from within since they know the culture and business best!
Invest in those who seek to better themselves and show drive to take on more responsibility. Reward them instead of letting people walk out the door for greener pastures.

    Location
    Work Life Balance
    Competitive Compensation
    Great Mission

    Cons

    No transparency
    Too many "lifers"
Technology systems are dated at best
    Uncertain Future

    Advice to Management

Some of senior management should have been fired not offered a voluntary layoff package. It is sad to see a 60 year old company run into the ground. Senior management never listened to the people on the front lines. They had great ideas and tons of passion for the mission. It is only now that we have an acting CEO whom has really reached out to the people. Too bad it's too late for most of us. I do hope she is able to salvage what is left and help ASA to regenerate and become a great place to work once again.

I worked at American Student Assistance full-time

    Pros

Great family atmosphere, focus is really put on helping student borrowers do what is best for them even if it's not best for business.

    Cons

The company's new direction of providing education debt management services to borrowers is a great idea but is being handled in a poor way, the company is trying to run a start up company the same way it ran the federal student loan side of business which is causing the development of the new line of business to grow very slowly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the new line of business and get someone in there to help grow it that is not associated with the government side of business. Also utilize your front line assets of your associates on the phones, the people that have been there for years handling these calls have some great ideas on how to grow the business utilize them!
