I have been working at American Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nationwide. Employee Owned. In-house training encouraged. Strong work ethic, and belief in individual accountability being an essential factor in the companies success. Opportunities to work in areas outside your primary field. Numerous additional benefits for those that qualify, and/or enroll-in, such as health/welfare tracking, legal help, retail discount programs, etc.

    Cons

No 401k match. Would like to see more corporate wide events inclusive of all employee owners.

    Advice to Management

Involve satellite facilities and field/telecommuter employees in HQ/Business Office events more; even if it is only via web conference or as a nationally coordinated event company wide. A couple of years ago we telecast an event from the HQ lounge, it was great to be able put faces to names for those employees I work with that are not in the metro D.C. area, and I would like to be a part of something like that again.

We have a great company culture and my particular office location has wonderful leadership that truly promotes teamwork/collaboration, life/work balance, and mutual respect.

    Cons

I haven't had any negative experiences, but I would appreciate better maternity/paternity leave benefits

    Pros

I love the flexible hours. The American System coworkers are amazing.

    Cons

Working on a government military base impacts the flexibility. Special approval is needed to work during off hours.

    Advice to Management

    Better communication down the chain.

    Pros

ESOP, Telework, Life/Work Balance, PTO/Holiday hours

    Cons

No training budget. Contractual work with end dates and no clear plans for employees on the contract.

    Advice to Management

Invest in employees to retain them and have a plan in place for employees upon contract completion.

    Advice to Management

Invest more time in retaining good employees, across multiple contracts, rather than risk losing them

    Pros

    Nice people. Very friendly.

    Cons

...cubicle work spaces shared with other contracting organizations, however, are not conducive to productivity. Not the company's fault, just how the organization was set up.

I worked at American Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The ESOP, cannot think of anything else

    Cons

-top heavy structure where EVERYONE is a VP or director
-mid and upper management are old and male who have been there forever, are in their late 50s-60s and they have a 1980s outdated management style
-despite being a mid tier sized company, the level of bureaucracy is staggering (i.e., this company loves numerous 8-5 all day all hands in a conference room meetings several times per month)
-C suite leadership never takes responsibility for the company's shortcomings and instead yells at the room to assign blame during said numerous 8-5 all day meetings
-meetings are run by upper management with a know it all, belligerent, combative, gotcha questions atmosphere
-employees must use PTO for federal holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.

    Pros

Employee owned. Most co-workers are top notch.

    Cons

Ridiculous amount of internal politics. Chaotic leadership that creates zero confidence.

I have been working at American Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They really need an employment status option that says "current employee willing to jump ship at the first shinny that passes by and doesn't add to the commute".

We do get paid semi regularly. Typical beltway job shop tied to government contacting.

General lack of communication, stove pipe management, and lack of accountability make this an easy place to work if you don't care about anything. Keep your seat warm and put 8h on your time card before you leave for the day.

Burdensome HR who C suite leader is the archetype villain from one of those books on a "5 books every CEO should read list". So you have hours of entertainment there.

Every contract is a bit different so you might work with a good group. However, upper management is still always there.

    Cons

They don't contribute to your 401k. It's an ESOP, not publicly traded, and a 10 year pay out. They have 5 years to start and can do 20% a year.

    Advice to Management

You have been there 20-30 years you are just leaning out the company before you sell it Stop lying to the employees and just riding your stock options. Sell out already and let this corpse rest.
