I have been working at American Type Culture Collection full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most people are nice and very helpful.

    Cons

So many- where should I start.
Benefits- ATCC used to have 7.5 hour work days. All of the sudden word of mouth spread and increased to 8.0hr. No official communication was sent out and employees had a couple of month (perhaps less) to make any arrangments. The latest disaster happened this week. This time we received an email about our short term disability and in the middle of it, said they are cutting our sick time from 12 days to 5 days!!! Needless to say, employee morale is at its lowest after this blow. If you have a chronic illness, taking care of someone who does or have young children- this is extremely concerning.
Management- everyone is in for themselves. Most don't care about their employees and the few that do are too scared to speak up.
HR department- the entire department left last year and now we have a bunch of blood sucking individuals who are disrespectful and extremely unprofessional. Not sure why they occupy any space in the building given no-one is allowed to ask them any questions about anything.
Promotions?- Unheard of...well unless you're in the "in" circle. New positions are being created and people are getting promoted to roles they don't have a clue about.

    Advice to Management

Get a conscious and start treating your employees with decency. Greed will drive this company to the ground.

I have been working at American Type Culture Collection full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

ATCC has an excellent reputation and the company has an important impact in supporting global research. The products from ATCC are excellent.

    Cons

Recently, ATCC have reduced the sick leave accrual from 12 to 5 days per year.
Salaries are quite low and other biotech companies in the area are offering much better package (please check on Glassdoor). The new ERP system was a disaster that affected employees productivity and customer service. Any process in the company is brutally slow, you need hours at the phone and write dozens of emails to get something moving. Needless to say, like many reviews have already explained: the management is extremely poor. The HR office was excellent in the past, but unfortunately there was a turnover the last year, and such office is became very unsupportive and unprofessional.

    Advice to Management

Company has an excellent potential but the policy is poor. For an instance, the decision of reducing the annual sick days was terrible, also considering that ATCC is a not-for-profit organization. The employees with chronic diseases or with young children are extremely frustrated! There are a number of reasons why the rating of ATCC in Glassdoor is so poor, and the company experiences chronically an employees turnover.

I have been working at American Type Culture Collection full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    None at this time

    Cons

Lack of appreciation, no positive motivation, favorite employees and no changes expected to this in the future. Performance based pay increase a joke! No one other than upper management gets paid any where near industry standards! There is no where to complain. We have a non existent HR department which is rude and unresponsive. Our latest abuse, cutting our annual sick leave from 12 days to 5 days. 7 days of sick leave stolen from our pay. And don't forget that bonuses only go to the " kool aid" followers who are highly scored. The last 2 years have been painful with many employees leaving.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the hard working employees who come in early, stay late, work weekends and get paid hardly enough to live on. These are the same people who will get tired of the abuse and just leave.

    Pros

It has potential but a few nasty people run off good people.

    Cons

Unfortunately a few bad seeds in management lend towards the current chaos going on. Particularly the mother-son management team which is completely unprofessional.

    Advice to Management

Hire a new team lead for the International group.

I worked at American Type Culture Collection (More than a year)

    Pros

Its a biotech company and looks good on your resume. Most work is pre-defined so if you are someone who doesn't like troubleshooting, then its good for you.

    Cons

Narrow door for upward mobility hence employees stepping on each other to get noticed. Bad behavior by some employees not checked especially if they are close to supervisors and upper management. Policies of equality just on paper but not followed and sad thing is no one seems to care enough to check it. A lot of attempt to flood online reviews with good reviews and comments just to offset the genuine bad reviews by they are receiving from employees, don't be fooled. If you have another option, PLEASE run away from this company....Good luck

    Advice to Management

Check the people you put in charge and encourage them to correct bad behavior by employees. Also have policies to prevent favoritism and bias towards their friends... Its a good mission you have there but the working environment is absurd...

    Pros

Great co-workers - unfortunately, many are burned out

    Cons

    Dysfunctional management
    Poor treatment of employees
    Disaster of an ERP system
    Customers bailing left and right
Below market pay, constant hiring freezes, limited upward mobility

    Advice to Management

Why offer advice when it falls on deaf ears? Management solicits advice and then does the exact opposite.

I have been working at American Type Culture Collection full-time

    Pros

some of the people here are professional and nice to be around

    Cons

Management is terrible and inefficient, leadership sets you up for failure by not providing proper training then blames you for not knowing that you were trained properly. The companies leadership invested in a terrible management system that has failed to work properly from day one yet holds people accountable for things that they could not input into the system because the system failed and has to send out frequent apology emails. this place sucks, work culture sucks, they don't value their employees over their bottom line and it shows in everything they do. goals are general and your bonus evals are based on a subjective overview of you reaching arbitrarily defined goals (so if you don't kiss up to your supervisor there goes your bonus. ATCC does not pay industry standard, they only get a way with this because there are few biotech companies in Northern Virginia; I wish I would have known about the plethora of biotech companies in Maryland that offer competitive salaries before I moved here for this job.

    Advice to Management

develop a plan for upward mobility, have clear and concise goals well defined for each position, offer at least industry standard for pay.

    Pros

Great opportunity for Nova area early career, especially if you'd like to give back by working at a not-for-profit

    Cons

Rocky road to hoe for any that stay beyond that first promotion. And with recent re-definition of biologist roles, many are now in positions they are far overqualified for but have no hope of being promoted into.

    Advice to Management

Hmm. They wouldn't take it if I gave it so its not worth me trying to type it.
