I worked at American University in Cairo (Less than a year)

    Pros

The place didn't work you to death. There was lots of time off and the place paid a very competitive salary. Housing was provided. It was great to work in such an "international" place.

    Cons

My academic department was in disarray a lot of the time. Our department chairperson was always changing. Not all managers were terribly adept or insightful. Students were sometimes very arrogant and demanding.

    Advice to Management

    None. See above.

I have been working at American University in Cairo full-time

    Pros

For the most part, the staff and faculty are congenial. There is faculty housing right across from campus in New Cairo with some shuttle services to shopping malls and to Cairo. If you choose not to live in New Cairo, AUC provides bus service to other parts of Cairo. AUC has an excellent sport's facility which faculty can use for a price.

    Cons

There is a great deal of uncertainty among faculty, and a high turnover of faculty. There is an increasing need for part-timers and locals to teach courses as overseas faculty choose to leave or are let go. Administration tends to make decisions without the full consent of faculty. Faculty who are residents and citizens of Egypt or dual nationals may have to take all of their pay in Egyptian LE. Local hires do not believe they are treated as well as overseas hires which can lead to discontent in some departments. The housing for faculty is overpriced. It comes out of your salary. You may be overcharged for just about any kind of services-even the travel services offered at AUC. Foreigners need to be careful while living in Egypt. It is not as safe as it used to be.

    Pros

Great team, you learn a lot of skills working with different students that need your help, rewarding when you actually make a difference with a student, free food sometimes!

    Cons

Pay is very low, you usually get 3 students to work with and each student is perceived as an hour of work. That is equivalent to only 45 pounds per week. Also, weekly meetings are always set on monday and can never be changed so you have to work your schedule around that.

    Advice to Management

    Please increase pay for students!
