Satisfied employee
Apr 14, 2014 - Assistant Director of Development in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The environment is professional, yet relaxed. Most of my coworkers are passionate about their work. While many staff members have their work email on their smartphones, many do not feel the need to check it after hours or on weekends. It mainly depends on your position, but most of the junior staff maintain a very healthy work-life balance, consisting of 7-hour work days. The campus community is always teeming with activities to participate in to better yourself, such as professional skill building workshops and health-oriented challenges. It is very easy to get involved if you are interested, but are not pressured to do so if you'd rather not. Great benefits (retirement, professional development, and tuition remission are the highlights). My department places a particular focus on professional development, which I appreciate.
Cons
The actual campus no longer accommodates a lot of supporting divisions for the University. It is odd to work so far from campus. Upward mobility can be tricky at times - I'm not sure about how long I can stay in my current position without stunting my career. I think your satisfaction as an employee here is directly related to the competency of your supervisor to be an effective manager. We receive a large number of days off in December, but otherwise, the annual leave in your first few years is a bit stingy (one day per month for the first two years; 1.25 days off for years 2 - 5) and is a bit difficult to stretch far enough. Parking is VERY expensive.

Overall Good Company
Apr 6, 2016 - Program Specialist Key Executive Leadership Program in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Depending on the department you work in, the at work benefits are great. Lots of free food. All speakers and events are open to staff. Gym membership is only $16 month. HR is very helpful for Short Term Disability Issues
Cons
Parking is very frustrating and the policies are always changing. The medical benefits are the bare minimum and you accrue leave rather than start off with all of your PTO.

Administratively, not on the cutting edge
Apr 24, 2014 - Management in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They have a very nice location, a beautiful campus with top-of-the-line attractions, including the President of the United States, and they offer great benefits, including paid tuition for employees and families. There are functions where very interesting political and other celebrities appear for speaking engagements. The admin assistants at this institution are all very highly educated, as many had Masters degrees.
Cons
Was difficult to foster change (which is typical in higher ed), communication with management in certain areas was difficult and the systems reflected old technology and were not easy to work with. Parking was not always easy and some of the admin offices were not located geographically near one another and were not on the main campus.

There is a place here for people with ideas and patience
Oct 22, 2014 - Program Associate in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Nice work-life balance, I had the benefit of working in a unit with seasonal highs and lows. Plenty of time to study or participate in other campus events.
Cons
Bureaucratic as you would expect a university to be. Parking fees ridiculously high. HR office is not deployed for the benefit of the staff, but rather to cover the administration's liabilities.
