"The AUA compensates it's employees well for an association, however, work environment can be stressful."

I worked at American Urological Association full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Perks: great health insurance, two retirement plans (employer match, etc.), end of year bonus contingent on performance, etc. Some bosses take real interest in the continuing and professional education of their subordinates.

    Cons

If you are in a well-run department you have no need to worry. However, some departments are the black sheep of the association depending on whether the work product is a revenue generator or an expense. Also, some employees are known to have problematic attitudes/work styles and are given a pass while others seem to have HR gunning for them. Occasionally, information doesn't funnel down clearly from level to level (ED to AED --> middle management --> support staff).

    Advice to Management

Communicate better with all employees. A team is only as good as its weakest link.

I worked at American Urological Association full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great health benefits to cover the stress issues you get from working at the organization.

    Cons

The AUA does not care about their employees. The Human Resources department is not a resource at all, and definitely can not be trusted. If you bring complaints about management to Human Resources-they are not addressed and are used to build a case against you instead of addressing the problem-MANAGEMENT. The executive level is the only level that matters at the AUA, and anyone below the executive level they will happily terminate "AT WILL" or strategically change your work load and treat you unfairly to force you to want to leave. The benefits are not worth the stress and raises decrease each year. I would not recommend this organization to anyone.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and make changes to management.

I have been working at American Urological Association full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work schedule can be flexible and there are nice and smart folks here. The facilities are nice.

    Cons

Very conservative culture. Whoever posted the 5 star review is probably HR staff or someone higher up the ladder. It reads like a job ad! Who lists parking as a benefit when the location is in the middle of nowhere between Baltimore and D.C.? This place does not have a small company feel. Many key positions are filled by capable people, however, they are stretched thin and given very little power to actually finish projects and propel change. This place needs to take bigger strides in changing, training management, and in hiring the right people. There is a large customer and member base but only a staff of 3-4 customer service reps, who are all under-appreciated and under-compensated. Smart people leave or are poached left and right due to low pay. Upper management does not like to work with their staff; they're more like rulers than leaders.

    Advice to Management

Please be more progressive, be open to training and change.

    Pros

Great people, wide variety of positions available. Friendly, small company feel but comprehensive benefits and competitive salary. Easy commute from Baltimore city area, and great parking situation. Lots of employee friendly events - they keep feeding you!

    Cons

I have not experienced any particular downsides.

I worked at American Urological Association full-time

    Pros

If all you care about is good benefits, then this is the place for you. They do have a nice benefits package like other reviewers have said. You may meet a few good plebes as well.

    Cons

There are serious management issues here, with entire departments essentially turning over. There is a reason why certain jobs have been posted over and over again. Avoid them like the plague!

    Advice to Management

Do something about the high turnover among your non-managerial staff. You should really listen to those exit interviews and actually do something about the craziness that goes on.

    Pros

Liberal policies in regard to time-off, start and end time, monthly free lunch, attractive work environment

    Cons

Conservative culture, run by accountants, very hierarchical. The minions are a revolving door, lots of turn over, you fit or more than likely you don't.

    Advice to Management

High turn over makes it difficult, little to no opportunities for advancement

I have been working at American Urological Association full-time

    Pros

The benefits at the AUA are unreal. They offer an on-site gym, lots of free food at meetings, holiday parties, great health benefits, free $1200 a year of HSA money or employees who elect to cover only themselves under health and vision policies and the entire year's vacation upfront. It is these benefits that will make it hard to move on from the AUA.

    Cons

Unusually high employee turnover, some departments have little to no growth, no professional development opportunities, lower than average pay, very strict about not working from home. Some departments are severely under staffed.

    Advice to Management

Recognize employee achievements, allow working from home on occasion and consider implementing professional development opportunities--your employees will thank you.

I worked at American Urological Association full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are very friendly. There are a lot of little perks such as potlucks and grill days, winter gala, food at meetings, etc. Good health benefits, 403B and leave policies.

    Cons

No opportunities for advancement; high turnover in departments throughout the organization. Salaries are slightly below industry standard.

    Advice to Management

Consider reducing staff turnover by rewarding staff who work diligently and perform above average. Title changes and salary adjustments would go a long way. Consider the opportunity cost of losing employees with historical knowledge.
