I have been working at American Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have been a contractor with American Water Resources in Mount Laurel, NJ. There is an extremely friendly work culture there and management has been very receptive to my ideas and commentary. For it being a corporation, it isn't as rigid as I initially imagined it to be. Overall, I feel very comfortable working at AWR and am happy to be a part of the team.

    Cons

I wish it was a little more progressive with current industry trends/working remotely.

    Pros

Company is moving full speed towards new technologies, trying to be attractive to a younger group of IT professionals

    Cons

Technology doesn’t have a soul, it has a goal. Experience, dedication and loyalty don’t matter anymore.

    Advice to Management

Business needs and knowledge of the unique business circumstances cannot always be addressed by changing the workforce. It can only create an instability and degrade the human factor.

I have been working at American Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The focus has shifted for technology at American Water. Instead of being just thought of as an expense, technology is now a strategy for the company. We are now building really cool apps that no one else in the industry is doing. People in the field are now excited about the app’s being delivered instead of the same old SAP systems we had been supporting. The company is now investing in technology.

    Cons

Huge changes are not for everyone. Technology is now moving very very fast and not everyone is able t keep up. This can result in a lot of stress on the teams and a culture clash between how things used to be done and how they need to be done now.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in technology. Be a little more patient with the changes. Bring along as many employees as you can who want to be part of building cool apps.

    Pros

Pay, benefits and team make it somewhat bearable. You are doing valuable work for the world and for future generations.

    Cons

Constant firing of management and re-organization is very distracting to the people who are trying to work. This is not a company to work for long-term.

    Advice to Management

    Change technology leadership

    Pros

Protect the public health by producing clean safe potable drinking water. Provide great customer service & dependability. Good motto at least.

    Cons

Micro managing and cost saving to the point of being pound foolish. Wasted money on bad technology or threw out technology that wasn't utilized to its potential.

    Advice to Management

    Get your priorities straight.

    Pros

Excellent healthcare benefits and generous tuition reimbursement. Overtime available.

    Cons

Very poor morale and culture at the call center. Too many changes and processes that are simply not effective. New IVR for customers is horrible. No bonuses and raises are minimal.

I have been working at American Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

there are no pros. Everyone is miserable. People are getting fired left and right, some have been with the company for 20+ years. AVOID this cesspool

    Cons

OMG, where do I start? Frequent reorgs which result in huge loss of talent and highly skilled individuals either quitting or getting fired. This happens 3-4 times/year.
The company under this new coo coo for cocoa puffs new age guru is in shambles.
It is apparent to EVERYONE what's happening: all 'veteran' skilled individuals are being replaced by H1B workers from a certain continent who work for pennies, are obedient and keep their heads down no matter how much vitriol is spilled around them.
More than 50% of the workforce at "AMERICAN WATER" is not American.
This has to be be by far one of the worse places you can work for. Misearble, toxic dog eat dog environment.

    Advice to Management

your stupidity and greed will be your downfall. Some of the people you let go can and more then likely will make your stock plummet. Short sellers: short AWK .

I worked at American Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good retirement benefits and ESPP program. Decent vacation and sick time. Commute is good, public transportation and major highways nearby. Good company if you are just starting your career. You will learn a great deal and meet some great people. You will also learn how to deal with negative and difficult people too.

    Cons

Work/life balance only exists for those who do not have good work ethic. Advertise great culture but fall short on delivery. If you are good at your job you will not move on up because you are good at your job. Promotions or development communicated often but not a realization. They will over work the employees until they burn out. Too many talented, experienced people leave due to frustration, bad culture and poor leadership.

    Advice to Management

Step back and re-evaluate. Please and Thank You go a long way. Appreciate and value your achievers and clean out the baggage. Practice and live the culture you always talk of but are not doing before your back to all contractors working there again.

I worked at American Water full-time

    Pros

Good company, good benefits, good uppermanagement

    Cons

Some management ranging from Managers to Superintendents who were part of Elizabethtown Water Co. are still employed and cover for each other when things hit the fan. Upper management needs to come in and investigate how management is running its office in Plainfield.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to come in and investigate how management is running its office in Plainfield. Good employees have been let go for reasons that are false and for reasons that old management covered up as part of their own shortcomings.
