I worked at American Water full-time

    Pros

Co-workers were the only pro at this company

    Cons

Leadership changes almost every 3 years and that means constant re-organizations and lay offs. Current leadership sees no value in employees that have tenure at the company and are strategically getting rid of them. The morale of the company is extremely low. Recommend avoiding this company. If you do go here - plan not to stay more than 3 years.

    Advice to Management

    Hopefully you'll be replaced soon

    Pros

The staff members that have been at American Water for years are very talented and of high character..

    Cons

Leadership is technically and organizationally incompetent.
Deception is constant, long hours produces poor morale
2 major layoffs in 4 years

    Advice to Management

Ask to be shown a non-demo, non-mock, production worthy deliverable, there are none

I worked at American Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to gain experience, decent benefits, consistent pay, relationships with the local employees.

    Cons

Arrogance, poor upper management, upper managers have NO trust in lower level managers, lower level managers do not allow their hourly staff to make ANY decisions, company thinks they are the best and they are NOT! Wake up! A perfectly good company being driven into the ground.

    Advice to Management

Committees aren't going to solve your issues. Practice what you preach, get rid of the fluff, and start focusing on your customers instead of making the lives of all your workers miserable!!

    Pros

nothing that I can say would count as a Pro for this company now.

    Cons

same old story, save money by laying off all the people that helped build the company to what it is today.

    Advice to Management

    Look in the mirror.

I worked at American Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The majority of hard-working local staff with great intentions to take care of families and customers

    Cons

The majority of terrible managers and corporate "support." No work-life balance. Long-hours, plenty of blame placed on good people. Cannot hire any talent anymore because of their well-known abusive treatment toward employees and contractors. California especially bad!

    Advice to Management

Learn to value good people that work for you. Clean up your culture (try yet another corporate culture initiative... I'm sure it will work this time)

    Pros

Pay is decent and benefits are good. Susan story (CEO) can definitely sell water. Some states know what they are doing but MO is not one of them.

    Cons

Inept VP over MO since he's not ran operations in 10 years. Safety and training is a joke. Some employees want to make it better but management upper management needs to go. Under staffed and expect to work 12 hour days.

    Advice to Management

Some states got it most do not.

I have been working at American Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoy the job and the projects I get to work on. People are nice for the most part

    Cons

HR and managers play a game of trying to see how low they can keep your salary. It's a constant game and they end up losing tons of good, young workers because of it. HR is destroying the company with different rules from state to state. They must be so bored that they get excited when they can turn down employees with great reviews for promotions or raises. HR department gets an overhaul and turnover every few months, so they must realize they are bad.

    Advice to Management

Identify talent and actually develop it. Stay loyal to employees that are loyal to you. You lose employees when you aren't willing to invest in them, both financially and educationally.

I have been working at American Water full-time

    Pros

Its a job and there will be opportunties for some folks in the organization. However it is a case of buyer beware. In evaluating opportunities with AW, it is best to enter with eyes open.

    Cons

Seeing a lot of posts recently that are reputably written by internal employees, however they have the smell of a HR commercial. The reality is the ITS organization is badly led, has been badly led, and , in all likelihood, will continue to be badly led in the future. There are some opportunities to be had to be true, however the strategic direction is towards outsourcing the IT operations no matter which way someone tries to spin it.

    Advice to Management

Its going to take more than having the HR organization write reviews on Glassdoor trying to spin the situation. Quite frankly, the organiation would be much better served by taking a long hard look in the mirror and stop wasting everyones time by writing fan fiction.

I worked at American Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Health care benefits were pretty cheap. Other than that not much.

    Cons

I worked at this company for six months, I was being proactive in finding this job due to a potential contract layoff. When speaking with the manager I was under the impression that this company was stable, after 3 months being there and speaking with multiple coworkers I quickly found out that this company has a history of ceos and reorganizations which was quickly affirmed when a new CTO was brought in and spoke about "IT transformation".

It's obvious the CTO was beating around the bush regarding reorganization.

    Advice to Management

Don't lie to your hiring candidates about the company's stability, you just waste their time and yours.

    Pros

none - investors and stock price is the company's first priority, not its employees or doing whats right.

    Cons

employees are treated like trash - they throw you out the door when they are done working you into the ground. The water/sewer systems are falling apart, no maintenance is being done to keep water safe, they wait until things break, which costs more to fix and causes boil orders and disrupts businesses and schools.

    Advice to Management

Get your priorities straight! Mission and values are a joke.
