I worked at American Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The majority of hard-working local staff with great intentions to take care of families and customers

    Cons

The majority of terrible managers and corporate "support." No work-life balance. Long-hours, plenty of blame placed on good people. Cannot hire any talent anymore because of their well-known abusive treatment toward employees and contractors. California especially bad!

    Advice to Management

Learn to value good people that work for you. Clean up your culture (try yet another corporate culture initiative... I'm sure it will work this time)

    Pros

Pay is decent and benefits are good. Susan story (CEO) can definitely sell water. Some states know what they are doing but MO is not one of them.

    Cons

Inept VP over MO since he's not ran operations in 10 years. Safety and training is a joke. Some employees want to make it better but management upper management needs to go. Under staffed and expect to work 12 hour days.

    Advice to Management

Some states got it most do not.

I have been working at American Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoy the job and the projects I get to work on. People are nice for the most part

    Cons

HR and managers play a game of trying to see how low they can keep your salary. It's a constant game and they end up losing tons of good, young workers because of it. HR is destroying the company with different rules from state to state. They must be so bored that they get excited when they can turn down employees with great reviews for promotions or raises. HR department gets an overhaul and turnover every few months, so they must realize they are bad.

    Advice to Management

Identify talent and actually develop it. Stay loyal to employees that are loyal to you. You lose employees when you aren't willing to invest in them, both financially and educationally.

    Pros

Its a job and there will be opportunties for some folks in the organization. However it is a case of buyer beware. In evaluating opportunities with AW, it is best to enter with eyes open.

    Cons

Seeing a lot of posts recently that are reputably written by internal employees, however they have the smell of a HR commercial. The reality is the ITS organization is badly led, has been badly led, and , in all likelihood, will continue to be badly led in the future. There are some opportunities to be had to be true, however the strategic direction is towards outsourcing the IT operations no matter which way someone tries to spin it.

    Advice to Management

Its going to take more than having the HR organization write reviews on Glassdoor trying to spin the situation. Quite frankly, the organiation would be much better served by taking a long hard look in the mirror and stop wasting everyones time by writing fan fiction.

    Pros

    Great benefits and salary.

    Cons

Upper Management and Executives seem to be only about themselves and do not want to spend money on investing in their employees. The company management only want things for themselves not their employees. This Company is deceitful in the way employees are treated and are not appreciated for their hard work. It seems upper management is never happy. Also impossible work and project tasks and deadlines and too many unreasonable people.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip start listening to your employees and offer support instead of giving people a hard time. Have empathy for your employees and stop spending money on yourselves it's not about just you upper management.

I worked at American Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Health care benefits were pretty cheap. Other than that not much.

    Cons

I worked at this company for six months, I was being proactive in finding this job due to a potential contract layoff. When speaking with the manager I was under the impression that this company was stable, after 3 months being there and speaking with multiple coworkers I quickly found out that this company has a history of ceos and reorganizations which was quickly affirmed when a new CTO was brought in and spoke about "IT transformation".

It's obvious the CTO was beating around the bush regarding reorganization.

    Advice to Management

Don't lie to your hiring candidates about the company's stability, you just waste their time and yours.

    Pros

none - investors and stock price is the company's first priority, not its employees or doing whats right.

    Cons

employees are treated like trash - they throw you out the door when they are done working you into the ground. The water/sewer systems are falling apart, no maintenance is being done to keep water safe, they wait until things break, which costs more to fix and causes boil orders and disrupts businesses and schools.

    Advice to Management

Get your priorities straight! Mission and values are a joke.

    Pros

Good people (not talking about senior leadership) and benefits. AW doesn't have anything else positive going for it right now. Sad, because it once was a great company to be a part of.

    Cons

After Corporate and IT sent surveys to its organizations requesting employee feedback, they took the opposite approach of what was asked by their employees. From a Corp perspective, employees didn't want the constant change. Instead, senior leaders decided to have two complete reorganizations in 24 months. From an IT perspective, the feedback was about the ridiculous review and goals process employees are subjected to. This has just gotten worse year over year and leadership communicated to employees that they just don't understand the process. Note: we understand the process perfectly. We don't agree with it.

    Advice to Management

Need to focus on your talent before they all leave.

I worked at American Water as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The drive to and from work was less then 20 minutes and never stuck in traffic

    Cons

The facility was poorly managed and ran by a lead worker with very little experience and a Bipolar attitude. I was wondering why a position like like that was always open they cant keep anyone or they get chased away.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of your lead either he is insecure or just lacks knowledge and is afraid of someone coming in exposing his lack of knoledge

    Pros

centrally located in south jersey area. easy to reach from 295. cant think of any other pros.

    Cons

poor morale among employees. behind the times in technology. very petty and political with limited advancement. upper management refuses to address seemingly psychological issues with certain management staff.

    Advice to Management

resign and replace yourselves. amwater executives in IT dept are subpar,. Other locations seem to be more progressive.
