I have been working at American Well full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The work itself is incredibly fun and rewarding, especially as telehealth is a rapidly growing market and there are lots of opportunities to be the first or the best. And of course there's the concrete positive effect of the work, as you can see how the health and quality of life for both patients and providers is improved by your efforts. The company really practices what it preaches: they explicitly welcome and... encourage new and challenging perspectives from any level of seniority, and then when you pipe up with your (hopefully carefully-considered and well-supported) ideas, they actually listen. Finally, as one of my coworkers stated rather bluntly, "they treat you like an adult." The work-life balance is good because it is assumed employees will manage their time and workload like professionals. You take the PTO or WFH time you need and as long as you get your work done, it's a non-issue. But also, why wouldn't you want to come to work?! Everyone is really friendly and the office has an amazing view!

    Cons

They got away with a lot of hacky solutions for years, which has created mountains of tech debt and design debt for the newer employees to chip away at. There are a few managers who will still push that whatever-is-fastest approach, but they're rapidly becoming a minority as the company moves toward a more serious commitment to quality. Still, the need to update or overhaul so many products can be daunting.... Similarly, the company is still figuring out how to work in a more cross-functional, agile manner, so there are some growing pains as the silos and waterfalls try desperately to hang on.

I have been working at American Well full-time

    Pros

Has good benefits and compensation for most people and roles, company is financially stable and has resources for growth, one of the top three telehealth companies in the space, many opportunities to learn and grow.

    Cons

Solutions and capabilities will take time to be fully developed, therefore, difficult to sell to new and existing customers, company culture has changed post Avizia merger (some things are better and some things, not so much), top heavy management structure, many good, talented people have left or were let go, job security is a real concern.

I worked at American Well full-time

    Pros

    the telehealth space is interesting

    Cons

senior management condones and encourages vile behavior. there are some really poor people in key leadership positions. if you like yelling, and honestly, who doesn't enjoy hearing coworkers get screamed at in public, this place is great.

I have been working at American Well full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Exciting place to work, great executive leadership and a robust telehealth product. I've chosen to return to the company because they are doing something unique that no one else has been able to achieve: connecting all of the key healthcare players on one technology platform and actually creating change industry-wide. Their client list speaks for itself -- and I see/feel growth across every aspect of the company in... terms of business strategy, partnerships, executive vision, HR protocols and culture. Boston is a fantastic city for health/tech and American Well is a great place to put your skillset to work - at whatever level - within an environment where you'll be rewarded for your efforts and grow both personally and professionally along the way.

    Cons

American Well is making some big changes to company culture and it's exciting to see these changes benefit employees, strengthen the company's brand and impact as a technology and healthcare leader in the U.S.

    Advice to Management

It's important to be self-aware in your role, in terms of the work that you do, but also the manner in which you do that work. Pay attention to how leadership manages their teams. Everyone brings expertise in different areas; lean on those who have niche skillsets. Emphasize: work smart vs. work hard to remove extra spin cycles. Foster an environment where strong voices can be heard, but also encourage an attitude... of humility.

    Pros

Nice solutions for telehealth and products.

    Cons

Weak sales leadership and CEO who enjoys bulling employees and lacks compassion. Creating a toxic environment which has created a massive revolving door of employees who were either laid off or resigned because of this weak leadership.

    Advice to Management

Don't pull sales people out of the field to bully them in front of their peers and have them survey each other creating a brutal bully like environment. Sales leadership should not mirror CEO or President who are no likable just well dressed bullies.

"Great people and product, but no growth potential and management has free reign, no retention policy, no 401K"

I worked at American Well full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people are great and work really hard. The technology stack is mostly current and interesting to work with. The product is truly revolutionary and will shape healthcare in the very near future. Cool to be part of such a growing company and the telehealth movement. CEOs really have vision, even if it's not always obvious. New hires are paid market salaries and sometimes even above industry standard.

    Cons

No rules - HR has no say, and R&D rules are changing constantly to meet whims of senior management - this usually does not work out to the benefit of the devs. No yearly salary increases and no review process in R&D. No retention plan, and new employees compensated and treated better than old employees - in other words, your loyalty will not pay off here. Arbitrary deadlines and little developer input most of... the time, with decision makers all at the top level - leads to missed deadlines, worse quality, thrashing development process and often requires long hours and acts of heroism to finish projects. No 401K match. No bonuses. Very little (if any) equity given out.

    Advice to Management

-A market adjustment so that new developers are not paid substantially more than those who have more seniority and often carry a heavier load. -Having a review process and annual cost-of-living adjustments is industry standard, especially in a highly competitive R&D job market. -Having senior management running the show in R&D with no recourse does not help retention, morale, or building a culture for the future.... Rules should be written, defined, and not change every 2-3 months on whims. -Invest in QA - it will help quality and save more time in fixing problems than the added cost of hiring more technical QA staff.

I have been working at American Well full-time

    Pros

American Well is at the cutting edge of moving telehealth forward. Very face paced environment with a lot going on.

    Cons

As it stands right now, American Well needs to to come up with more scalable solutions for rolling out the product to new clients. American Well is understaffed for how well the sales team is doing.

    Advice to Management

Improve benefits. American Well's benefits do not stack up to other software companies in Boston. Vacation balance is low, there is no bonus structure, currently no matching on 401k and space is tight with most people sharing offices and tiny rooms. I suggest they hire a true HR team with a proven track record.
