I have been working at Ameriprise for more than 10 years

    Pros

Benefits and work life balance. PTO is great. Large enough company to continue to develop professionally. Integrity is high, community involve is sincere.

    Cons

Not always a pioneer, usually a fast follower by design. Has a reputation for catering to a less sophisticated client, not true as huge strides have been made over the past decade.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good work-life balance, generous 401(k) and retirement plan match, decent PTO and a company culture which encourages employees to use it. Respectful work culture. Headquarters perks such as cafeteria, gym, and medical clinic.

    Cons

Salaries below market, and annual merit increases less than inflation. Absence of women and minorities in upper level leadership roles. Development and growth opportunities are limited the higher up you climb.

    Advice to Management

Prioritize and track diversity retention and hold upper management accountable for results. Hire and promote women and minorities to leadership roles. Recognize that a "good fit" with company culture is code for "will fit in with the white old boys club" and adjust accordingly. Match market rate base pay to keep employees happy.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Sincere, Customer focused people. Bright, honest organization

    Cons

Myopic, desperately preserving a 20th Century business model.

    Advice to Management

Leadership isn't a superpower, it's a cultivated skill; so is Humility.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The company pays very well, and has a really good benefits package. The culture is generally favorable.

    Cons

Can be extremely hard to get promoted, as opportunities are very limited, and the environment can be very hieratical.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the way personal development is conducted.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great purpose, love my adviser and what he does - but if he decided to leave Ameriprise, I would follow him. Depending on department, can be good rewarding experience. Nice facility with good amenities and downtown if you enjoy that. Leaders with high IQ's. The workers are great, all good people trying to do a good job. Highly respected CEO.

    Cons

Speaking to technology organization only as that is my experience - but comments could spread to other orgs. All new jobs ads start with "At Ameriprise it's about the people". This is a lie, technologies is absolutely one of the most toxic environments I had ever been in and "treating people with respect" couldn't be farther from it. Unfortunately, you won't realize how toxic it is until you get out and see what normal...

    Advice to Management

Recognize the lack of emotional intelligence in your technology leadership organization. Recognize the good-ole-boyz club and culture where people get ahead based on who they know and their delivery methods (based on results with lots of dead bodies left over). If you can't bring someone in who can do that analysis and provide subjective actionable feedback.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits, great cafeteria, reasonable maturity in business processes, reasonable (but not great) money, open to some employee growth, good location.

    Cons

Overall the management system is set up to compete with each other and leaders act like animals in a jungle. Ridiculous politics, incompetence at senior levels, rewards handed out to unethical people, and overall absence of executives. This company is successful by accident, not design.

    Advice to Management

You could be great, but you're settling for less than average because you reward the wrong behavior. Remove leaders that are unethical and you will change the world. You need 30% less people and more will get done.

    I worked at Ameriprise

    Pros

Large company pros - good benefits, lots of areas for future career moves, training, learning from and with smart colleagues, some interesting projects

    Cons

Large company cons - bureaucratic, lip service cultural programs (mandatory participation on an employee engagement committee - ugh), silo'd departments and territory turf wars among senior leaders

    Advice to Management

I quit my manager, not the company. He was a narcissistic empire builder focused only on his relative positioning with his peers - had very little people/team development interest or ability. The company as a whole isn't any better or worse than other large companies.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Excellent benefits, very professional environment

    Cons

Micromanaging disease. Management wants to manage every single action step. Reduces creativity and they are not very favorable of critique.

    Advice to Management

Consider trusting more the executives you actually hired. They have Talent so dont keep telling them what to do. Lower your hiring standards if you want robots to do whatever you tell them to do.

I worked at Ameriprise for less than a year

    Pros

Nice office and location. People are friendly. They have good learning systems that help the ability to grow your understanding of the world of finance.

    Cons

Didn't feel like there was a lot of room to grow. It really all depends who you work for. Because everyone owns their own practice, your day-to-day is very dependent with whoever owns the practice you work for.
