Former Employee - Business Development Director in Lake Grove, NY

I worked at Ameriprise for less than a year

    Pros

Nice office and location. People are friendly. They have good learning systems that help the ability to grow your understanding of the world of finance.

    Cons

Didn't feel like there was a lot of room to grow. It really all depends who you work for. Because everyone owns their own practice, your day-to-day is very dependent with whoever owns the practice you work for.

    Pros

Strong culture of trying to do the right thing for the right reasons. Strong emphasis on protecting customers.

Meeting culture kills engagement and availability. Resources are limited driving things to slip through the cracks.

    Advice to Management

No meeting Friday. Consider employee morale items among the low level and mid level leaders.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Large Technology organization with opportunity for focus broadly or narrowly based on your technical focus and even more opportunity outside of Information Technology across business units Conservative approach but willingness to explore new technologies, although with that conservative approach requiring a compelling case to go beyond exploration towards implementation

    Cons

Slow to make decisions sometimes getting mired down in analysis paralysis. Heavily relying upon partners which leads to some areas having very little practical knowledge of the areas of technology they deliver towards

    Advice to Management

Focus on driving tangible priorities, the vague goals top down do not drive results.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent pay, great benefits, generous vacation policy, good bonuses (as long as the stock market is doing well). Located downtown Mpls., a good place to be if you just want to "exist".

    Cons

Corporate Nepotism, poor leadership - micromanagement all the way up to the Executive Leadership Team , fear culture, chest beating rewarded, "you're lucky to work here" mantra, promotion of mediocrity, risk taking not encouraged, significant glass ceiling

    Advice to Management

You have jewels for employees but it's clear you do not understand what it's like to actually work at the company. The culture is abysmal and the leaders drive a culture of fear that makes it a good place to leave. Every employee I know well is looking for a job. The problem is your leaders. The behavior that is rewarded continues to drive the culture and nothing is ever done to hold leaders accountable for the culture...

    "Ameriprise Financial"

    • Senior Management
Former Employee - Regional Sales Director in Minneapolis, MN
    Positive Outlook

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fast paced environment. Travel often doing sales presentations and some one on one meetings. Lots of Autonomy to drive your results to hit company goals initiatives Focused on the client

    Cons

Not a common role in the industry so hard to explain to people from the outside. Low Compensation relative to similar positions You can't ever be doing enough to do a good job Rules, Regulations and vision continue to change every three years.

    Advice to Management

Too many levels of leadership to make quick effective change. Too many different people to report to.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

They offer good benefits and pay, including a liberal time off policy. You really understand how the work you do ties into the corporate objectives and goals so you feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself. I like the atmosphere. In the group I am in, it is relaxed and fun, but we deliver high quality work.

    Cons

If you are interested in moving up within the company you have to know which leaders to hitch your wagon to because that can mean the difference between staying in the same role and not advancing for 4 years or moving up 3 levels in 2 years.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent and consistent in the application of HR policies. People shouldn't have to guess what they need to do to get to the next level only to be told they are wrong and try again.
